Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves showed the New Orleans Hornets why they have the best road record in the NBA. Kevin Garnett had 22 points and 14 rebounds and the Timberwolves held the Hornets without a basket over the final 2 1/2 minutes to squeeze out a 94-89 victory. The Timberwolves trailed by as many as 12 points and never led until the last two minutes. But down the stretch, they tightened their underrated defense and improved to 13-6 on the road, the best mark in the league. "We always want to start the road trip off with a win and we did that tonight," said Timberwolves guard Sam Cassell, who scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. "We don't mind playing on the road. We understand the concept of playing the whole ballgame." "It was a bar-fight syle of game," Garnett said. "It wasn't like our typical game against Dallas or Sacramento that are high-speed games. It was a very controlled tempo game that came down to the wire, and you've got to make plays and execute." Garnett made just 9-of-24 shots but buried a baseline jumper over P.J. Brown to give Minnesota its first lead at 87-86 with 1:44 to go. That was the last basket of the game, as three free throws by Jamaal Magloire around two by Cassell left the teams in an 89-89 deadlock with 48 seconds left. Fred Hoiberg missed a jumper, but Garnett tracked down the rebound and saved it from going out of bounds to Hoiberg, who was fouled and made two from the line with 31 seconds to play. Baron Davis missed a jumper, and Garnett rebounded again before Latrell Sprewell made a pair of clinching free throws with 14 seconds remaining. In the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves outscored the Hornets, 31-16. "Even though they had us down and on the ropes we hung in there and put ourselves in position to win the ballgame," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We executed down the stretch and had some good defensive plays and KG had some big boards," Sprewell said. "We have to close out the game better," said Davis, who made just 8-of-23 shots. "We gave up 31 points in the fourth quarter, which is unacceptable." Sprewell scored 26 points and Cassell added 24 for the Wolves, who have won four in a row overall, seven of eight and 13 of 15. "This kind of game puts you in a position where you start to see the best in everybody," Garnett said. "We're starting to show a little character, to not quit, and a willingness to play tough on the road." Minnesota moved percentage points ahead of San Antonio into first place in the Midwest Division. The teams face each other in Texas on Wednesday night. Davis scored 22 points for the Hornets, who matched a season high with their third straight loss. New Orleans held a 73-63 lead entering the final period and still owned a 79-71 advantage with 8:11 to go on a basket by Magloire, who scored 14 points. But Cassell hit a jumper and 3-pointer to help pull Minnesota into an 83-83 tie with 2:53 to go. A 3-pointer by Davis 21 seconds later was the last basket for the Hornets, who fell to 18-3 when leading after three quarters.
