Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets did not need forward Kenyon Martin to post their highest point total of the season. Richard Jefferson and Rodney Rodgers picked up the slack in Martin's absence as the Nets defeated the Washington Wizards, 115-103, for their fifth win in six games. Martin served the second of a two-game suspension for fighting forward Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers on January 6. Jefferson scored 30 points - one shy of a season high - and Rogers, who has been in a season-long slump, added 18 and 13 rebounds. "The better I am, the better the team is," Rogers said. "We still have to get back on track. We had a little slump early on (in the season). We're trying to jell back into the team we were (the last two seasons)." Leading 51-47 at halftime, the Nets broke it open by outscoring the Wizards, 36-20, in the third quarter. Jefferson, who scored 18 points in the second half, capped the period by hitting a halfcourt shot at the buzzer. "Every day I continue to work harder and my teammates just give me the ball in great position," Jefferson said. Jason Kidd chipped in 18 points and handed out 13 assists for New Jersey, whose previous high output came in a 102-96 victory at the Los Angeles Clippers on November 27. Rookie Steve Blake paced the Wizards with 16 points off the bench, most of them in garbage time. New Jersey led by as many as 22 points early in the fourth quarter. "We had real trouble with our transition defense," said Washington assistant Mike O'Koren, a former Net. "They do that to you. It's a thing I know and it leads to easy baskets." Washington coach Eddie Jordan, a former Net assistant, was ejected with 8:38 left in the contest after getting hit with his second technical foul. "We've been battling this all season," said Wizards guard Brevin Knight, who scored 13 points. "When you get a team with a record that we have, that's the respect that you get. We know that we're going to get hit and sometimes there might not be any calls." Rogers' dunk with 4:30 left in the third quarter began a 16-3 run that gave the Nets an 87-67 cushion. "When Rodney got it going in the third, you could just tell that we were trying to get him the ball," Jefferson. "We were cheering him on and it kept him going. Everybody did a good job tonight."
