Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors refused to feel sorry for themselves after losing superstar Vince Carter. Alvin Williams' fallaway jumper in the lane snapped a tie with 17 seconds left in overtime as the Raptors overcame Carter's absence and posted a 78-74 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Williams scored all 16 of his points in the second half and overtime. His jumper snapped a 74-74 tie before his foul shot - after Lamond Murray hit one - made it 78-74 with 4.8 seconds left. "Alvin Williams is one of those guys who always play hard and worry about winning," Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill said. "Alvin played big-time basketball in the second half." With Chris Bosh already sidelined due to a sprained ankle, Carter suffered a sprained right quadriceps after missing a dunk with 4:42 left in the first quarter. He will be re-evaluated Friday. The shorthanded Raptors still built a 45-35 lead at the intermission before scoring only 25 points in the second half. George Lynch hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Hornets a 70-68 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation. But Jalen Rose faked Lynch off his feet and banked in a six-footer with one second remaining to force overtime. "We don't really understand our full potential," said Rose, who scored 20 points before fouling out with 3:27 left in overtime. "We have a lot of players who understand how to play the game, and once we get our cohesion and health back, we are going to be as tough as they come in this conference." Donyell Marshall also scored 16 points for the Raptors while Morris Peterson added 13 off the bench despite playing with a sore right ankle. "I got here a little early and got some treatment on my ankle and told coach that I could go, and it was not as bad as I thought it was," Peterson said. Lynch scored 12 points for the Hornets, who suffered a season-high fourth straight loss. Baron Davis was held to a season-low 10 points. "I think we played really tight tonight," said Hornets coach Tim Floyd, whose team made just 1-of-16 3-pointers. "We weren't the aggressor, and when we went into the year, that was our mindset. "If we watch this tape tomorrow, we're going to see a team in Toronto that was able to walk in and get whatever it wanted." Marshall also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who held the Hornets to a season low in points. "We were without Bosh and Vince," O'Neill said. "That's two of our best players. Other guys are supposed to step up. That's what good teams due. Jalen made a big-time shot to tie it."
