Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics continued to live and die with the 3-pointer in overtime, while the Orlando Magic just made shots. Tracy McGrady scored 42 points and Drew Gooden added a career-high 32 as the Magic dominated the final minutes of overtime in a 124-118 victory over the Celtics. In a game that featured 50 3-pointers, Boston forced overtime on Walter McCarty's shot from the arc with 2.3 seconds remaining. But the Celtics went cold in the final five minutes, making just 3-of-10 shots, including 1-of-6 from 3-point range. "I just told (the Magic), 'We've worked hard for 48 minutes, we need five more minutes of quality play and toughness," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "'This is your game, you earned it.' And they responded." "We felt like the momentum was still on our side going into overtime," said McGrady, who missed a 3-pointer at the end of regulation. "We got some big stops when we really needed them." En route to its highest total of the season, Orlando made its first four shots in overtime, starting with McGrady's 3-pointer to start the period. Gooden sank a jumper to give the Magic the lead for good at 116-115 and spark an 8-0 run. "I wad due," said Gooden, who made 12-of-18 shots. "The Boston big guys were playing me as a low-post player and really didn't credit me for my outside shot. I just had a lot of wide-open looks out on the perimeter and just knocked them down." Keith Bogans followed with a fast-break layup and Juwan Howard made a jump shot before Gordan Giricek sank a pair of free throws for a 122-115 cushion with 15 seconds remaining. Boston missed five consecutive shots - three by McCarty and two from Paul Pierce - before Mike James made a meaningless 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go. The Celtics made 3-of-10 shots in overtime. Pierce scored 20 points after managing only four in Wednesday's loss to Houston but sank only one basket in the extra period. He made just 7-of-26 shots and 2-of-10 3-pointers as he continues to battle a hand injury. "It wasn't one of my better nights," he said. "I've been laying poorly these last two games but I will take the bad with the good. I take the blame for not stepping up." Mark Blount had 15 points and eight rebounds and McCarty scored 14 points for the Celtics, who lost their third straight game despite having eight players in double figures. Boston shot 54 percent (44-of-82) from the floor, including 10-of-23 from the arc, but committed 22 turnovers leading to 35 points for opportunistic Orlando, which made 10-of-27 3-pointers.
