Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury made sure fellow Brooklyn native Lenny Wilkens was in good hands in his New York Knicks coaching debut. Marbury matched an NBA season high with 17 assists as the Knicks made Wilkens a success in his debut with a 108-88 rout of the Seattle SuperSonics. Wilkens, a Hall of Famer as a player and coach, admitted to nerves as he started his stint with his sixth team. Marbury helped allay them with a deft passing display, matching his total with Phoenix at Portland on December 18. "I was happy for him tonight," said Marbury, who has at least 10 assists in five straight games. "He definitely deserves it. As you can see the fans were yelling, 'Lenny! Lenny!' For him, its always good to get a win." The winningest coach in NBA history, Wilkens had just a brief practice Thursday with his new team and emphasized the defensive end. He was more than satisfied as the Knicks limited the SuperSonics to 36 percent (29-of-80) shooting. "Defense starts everything," said Wilkens, who coached Seattle to the 1979 NBA title. "You can have some fun playing defense because it will give us some easy opportunities. For most of the game, our defense was really good." With Marbury running the show, Keith Van Horn was the biggest beneficiary as he poured in a season-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Van Horn had 19 points by halftime as New York built a 60-42 cushion. "He found guys, found guys all the time in rhythm," said Van Horn, who sat out the fourth quarter. "When you catch the ball in rhythm and in the right spots consistently, it helps you get going (and) it helps the team get going. He was really passing the ball great tonight." New York took the lead for good with a 22-4 spurt bridging the first and second quarters as Allan Houston scored five points and Marbury dished out three assists. The Knicks scored the first 10 points of the second quarter for a 44-26 bulge as Marbury had eight assists just over 14 minutes into the contest. The onslaught continued after the break as Marbury found a driving Van Horn for a three-point play and an 80-49 advantage just past the midway point of the third quarter. After Van Horn's dunk, Marbury pointed to fellow Brooklyn native Spike Lee, who stood up to applaud from his courtside seat. "That's just how the game played out, I might come in here and get 50 one night," Marbury said. "Tonight Keith was on, Keith was hot." Seattle dropped its third straight, kicking off a four-game road trip in dismal fashion. Its finesse defense was shredded by the Knicks, who shot 57.5 percent (23-of-40) in the first half. "You expect this team to be ready to play and to come out aggressive and play at a higher level since they've been together," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Tonight they were the aggressors on both ends of the floor." New York captured its sixth straight home matchup with Seattle, gaining a split of the season series.
