Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After a futile start by both teams, Shareef Abdur-Rahim provided a little excitement at the end. Abdur-Rahim made two big baskets in the final 74 seconds as the Atlanta Hawks trudged their way to a 75-70 victory over the Toronto Raptors, who played without superstar Vince Carter. The first quarter was anything but pretty as the teams combined for just 24 points, the second-fewest in an opening quarter in the shot-clock era. Fort Wayne and Syracuse hold the record, combining for 18 points in 1956. It was sloppy throughout, but the Hawks were able to make the plays when it counted. Abdur-Rahim sank a jumper with 1:14 remaining to give the Hawks a 68-65 lead, then converted from the outside again 34 seconds later for a five-point cushion. "For me, it felt really good, because I was just struggling the whole night to make shots," Abdur-Rahim said. "Sometimes, I just missed. Some I felt like I got fouled on. Some I felt like I got a little help from them. We stayed with it. We were able to make plays, make shots when it counted." "We just have to keep giving it to him," Hawks point guard Jason Terry said. "I was coming off the pick and roll and they were paying a lot attention to me and I was finding him and he was knocking them down. The shots he did miss were contested." After making just 4-of-17 shots through three quarters, Abdur-Rahim made 4-of-6 in the final period. He collected 20 points and 12 rebounds. "He's been in the league long enough," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "He didn't turn down shots and he had his confidence going to knock them down." Stephen Jackson added 19 points for the Hawks, who beat the Raptors for just the second time in 13 meetings. Donyell Marshall netted 16 points and Alvin Williams 15 for Toronto, which was without Carter for the first time in 38 games this season due to a right quadriceps injury. Without Carter, the Raptors nearly were held below 70 points for a seventh time this season. They shot just 36.5 percent (27-of-74) from the field and made 11-of-22 free throws. "There's enough blame for all of us, including myself, to go around in this one," Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill said. "That's why you end up with (a) loss on the road. When you play crunch-type games, when you make mistakes, you're going to lose. We didn't execute very well all night." Rookie Chris Bosh, who returned after missing four games with a right knee injury, was main culprit at the line for the Raptors. He did not get to the line in the first three quarters, then went a woeful 2-of-9 in the final period. "Sometimes they just don't go in," said Bosh, a 65 percent foul shooter entering the contest. "There was a couple of them where I didn't shoot it like I usually do. All of them were too long, so I guess it was a bit of adrenaline." The Raptors never got going without Carter as they missed 13 of their first 15 shots and scored just four points in the first 8:50 of the contest. They managed eight points in the quarter, making a woeful 4-of-17 shots. Jackson netted 10 points in the half, helping the Hawks to a 37-31 advantage. Williams netted nine points in third quarter as the Raptors assumed a 52-51 lead. Terry added 10 points for the Hawks, who shot 39 percent (28-of-72) and held a 49-43 rebounding advantage in winning for the second time in three games.
