Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- In the fourth quarter, James Posey played like a man possessed. Posey scored 13 of his 17 points in the final period to victimize his former team and lead the Memphis Grizzlies to their fifth straight win, an 88-83 victory over the Houston Rockets. A 6-7 swingman, Posey was traded from Denver to Houston just over a year ago and became a restricted free agent last summer. He signed an offer sheet with Memphis, which Houston chose not to match. In his first meeting against his former team on November 1, Posey had eight points and nine rebounds in a 79-71 win. He appeared headed for another ho-hum game, while the Grizzlies seemed headed for a loss. Memphis trailed, 75-67, early in the fourth quarter when Posey caught fire. He made a jumper and a pair of 3-pointers in a 16-2 surge that gave the Grizzlies the lead for good. "I just go out there and play hard until the final buzzer," said Posey, who made 6-of-13 shots. "I had a slow start, but I was trying to do other things out there. We've got guys that can score. For me, it's being in the flow of the game." A pair of baskets by Yao Ming cut the deficit to 83-81 with 3:13 remaining, but Posey answered with another 3-pointer. "Posey was an offensive force tonight," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "(He) has been consistent all year for us." After two free throws by Steve Francis made it a one-possession game with 2:31 left, both teams went cold. In the final minute, the Grizzlies missed three jumpers and Posey ran down every one. "I was able to see the ball coming off and be quicker to it. That's all," Posey said. "There were long rebounds, and I just made sure I got them." "I'm sure it wasn't one particluar reason, whether it was being flat-footed, fatigued of whatever it may have been," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Posey corraled a loose ball after a mad scramble that saw Yao and Memphis guards Jason Williams and Mike Miller dive to the floor and made the clinching free throws with 12 seconds to go. He ran down another miss for his 10th rebound and dribbled out the clock before slamming the ball to the floor in triumph. "We'd go up, then they'd come back and take the lead, and we just kept fighting," Posey said. "It was a great time to be on the floor, to survive it all and get a win." "Their players dove. We dove, too," said Rockets guard Steve Francis, who scored 23 points. "But they came up with a lot of loose balls, especially Posey." Pau Gasol scored 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for Memphis, which is assured of the first winning January in franchise history. Mike Miller added 20 points. Yao and Cuttino Mobley scored 13 points each for the Rockets, who were outrebounded, 50-35, and have lost three in a row. "Defensive rebounding has been a strength of ours all year," Van Gundy said. "Tonight it was a weakness." A thunderous two-handed dunk by Gasol capped a 14-2 burst and gave Memphis a 60-49 lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter. Houston responded with 12 straight points - eight by Mobley - to take the lead.
