Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Down the stretch, Shareef Abdur-Rahim heated up and the Atlanta Hawks shut down the Chicago Bulls. Abdur-Rahim scored eight of his 22 points in a game-ending 11-0 run as the Hawks defeated the slumping Chicago Bulls, 97-87, and climbed out of last place in the Central Division. The Hawks (13-30) held the Bulls (12-30) without a basket for the final 6 1/2 minutes and scoreless for the last 3 1/2 minutes. Chicago has lost five straight games. "We just knew we had to get a stop," said Hawks guard Jason Terry, who had 14 points and seven assists. "Once we got one stop, we were able to score on the other end. Once we got one stop, we got two, then it turned to three. We just knew getting a loose ball or a stop was what it was going to take to win the game." "Some missed layups and poor execution hurt us right at the very end," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "We were struggling to get shots." Despite the droughts, the Bulls inched ahead, 87-86, on two free throws by rookie Kirk Hinrich with 3:35 to go. Abdur-Rahim answered with a strong driving layup and a jumper out of the low post for a 90-87 lead with 2:09 left. "The last two, three minutes of the game, I feel like coach is going to come to me," said Abdur-Rahim, who made 9-of-18 shots. "I think it's a responsibility I have to make something good happen - try to get a basket myself and get fouled or get somebody else a good shot." On the next possession, Theo Ratliff put home a follow dunk. As Chicago's offense unraveled, Abdur-Rahim had two foul shots and a layup around a free throw by Jacque Vaughn. "They played a small lineup," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "We wanted to take advantage of our big guys. Theo got some rebounds and I was glad that we were able to take advantage of their size when they did go small." Stephen Jackson also scored 22 points for the Hawks, who had lost five of their last seven games. Atlanta shot 50 percent (37-of-74). "Hopefully, we've turned the corner with tight games and making plays," Stotts said. "I think since we came back from the West Coast trip, we've tuned in on a lot of things and closed out games and (won) them." Reserves Kendall Gill and Eddie Robinson scored 17 points each for the Bulls, who got just 28 points from their starters and shot 43 percent (35-of-81). "It's very frustrating," Gill said. "It seems that we have that stigma on us in the fourth quarter that we can't close out games."
