Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Earl Boykins may be small, but he continues to come up big for the Denver Nuggets. Boykins drilled a 3-pointer to cap a late run and Marcus Camby had a huge game as the Nuggets posted a 97-92 victory over the Phoenix Suns. One of the smallest players in NBA history at 5-5, Boykins is in his first season with the Nuggets and serves as Andre Miller's backup at point guard, providing energy off the bench. Boykins scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws with 3:53 to go that snapped an 88-88 tie and gave the Nuggets the lead for good. After Camby dunked 11 seconds later, Boykins hit a 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining to go, capping a 7-0 surge that made it 95-88. Boykins and Camby combined to score the Nuggets' final 18 points. With the shot clock winding down, Camby hit a jumper from the right side with 22 seconds remaining to give the Nuggets the final margin. "I don't think they gave it to me," Camby said. "The shot clock was going down. I grabbed the loose ball, it was just a scramble situation. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time." "We had great contributions for a lot of people," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Earl made some critical shots, and Marcus was outstanding." Camby collected a season-high 22 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks for the Nuggets, who have won three in a row to move eight games (26-18) over .500 for the second time this season. Joe Johnson scored a career-high 28 points for Phoenix, which had a four-game winning streak stopped. "We squandered a couple of leads out there," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We didn't deserve to win. But everything that happened out there is something that we can take with us and learn from. We are still learning." Phoenix played without forward Amare Stoudemire, who missed the contest with a sore left ankle and a sore left big toe. The Suns held a five-point lead at halftime and took their largest advantage at 62-53 with 7:15 left in the third quarter on a follow shot by Shawn Marion, who scored 16 points. But the Nuggets battled back with a 15-6 run, including 11 straight points by Rodney White at one point, to forge a 66-66 tie. "I came in and got the tempo going a little bit," White said. "They left me open and I made some shots. I'm just trying to take advantage of my time. Sometimes my time has been very short and it's hard. I have confidence in myself. My thing is being aggressive." Andre Miller collected 22 points and nine assists and White scored 17 points for the Nuggets, who shot 51 percent (35-of-69) to overcome 19 turnovers. Phoenix shot 44 percent (42-of-95).
