Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Quentin Richardson had a big game, which usually translates into wins for the Los Angeles Clippers. Richardson scored 29 points and Elton Brand added 20 as the Clippers jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 93-82 victory over the shorthanded Utah Jazz. Richardson had nearly doubled his scoring from last season, averaging 17.5 points per game. He has been a key to the limited success of Los Angeles, which improved to 11-3 when he scores more than 20 points. "I didn't know that stat, but I like to know that if I play well the team is going to win," he said. "If he's on or not, we need him to shoot," Brand said. "He needs to score. Even if he doesn't make it, we can hit the glass." The Clippers never trailed after the first quarter, when they made 11-of-16 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers. Richardson was 6-of-7 and buried all three of his 3-pointers in the opening 12 minutes as Los Angeles jumped out to a 32-25 lead. "We wanted to get Q the ball early because he was hot," Brand said. The Clippers managed only 13 points in the second quarter but never relinquished the lead and controlled the second half against the struggling Jazz. Utah shot just 38 percent (33-of-86) and lost for the third time in as many games without forward Andrei Kirilenko, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle. Greg Ostertag had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Carlos Arroyo scored 16 points for the Jazz, who have lost a season-high four straight games. Los Angeles had a 45-43 halftime edge and scored the first eight points in the third quarter, sparked by a jumper from Richardson. Utah did not recover, making only 15-of-39 shots from the floor and 8-of-14 free throws after halftime. "The start of the second half got us in a bit of a bind," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "Truthfully, it was the finish down the stretch that cost us the game. I don't know how many layups and free throws we missed at the end." The Clippers shot 52 percent (24-of-46) in the first three quarters and were just 5-of-15 in the fourth but had their largest lead 80-65 after Brand made a hook shot with 9:22 left. "Utah always plays hard," Brand said. "They didn't give us easy baskets. They play with a lot of heart in determination. We won the game because we made plays and kept pushing when it got tough."
