Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Even without LeBron James, the Cleveland Cavaliers had more than enough to turn back the slumping Philadelphia 76ers. Eric Williams scored 20 points to lead a balanced attack as the Cavaliers built a big lead and held on for a 95-87 victory over the 76ers, their third in as many meetings this season. The Cavaliers played their third straight game without James, their teenage rookie phenom and leading scorer at better than 20 points per game. They improved to 2-1 without James as five players scored in double figures. "We have come together," said forward Carlos Boozer, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds. "I don't think we have one leader. I think we have leader by committee." "Once we get LeBron back, I can see a bright future," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "The chemistry is great. We're playing good solid defense. All is well right now." Dajuan Wagner added 17 points off the bench and Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 14 points for the Cavaliers, who led by as many as 20 points in the second quarter and withstood another Gund Arena outburst by Allen Iverson. "I knew they were going to cut into that eventually and when AI got hot in the third quarter, I was hoping we could hold on," Silas said. Iverson, who has a pair of 50-point games at Gund, scored 21 of his 32 points in the third quarter. But he managed just another hoop in the game's final minute as the Sixers lost for the fifth time in six games. Cleveland has won three in a row from Philadelphia after dropping 16 straight in the series. "Maybe we're not as good as we think we are," Sixers guard Eric Snow said. Williams and Boozer set the tone with eight points each in the first quarter, when the Cavaliers outscored the Sixers, 11-0, on the break and raced to a 30-18 lead. Also contributing was point guard Jeff McInnis, who started in his first game with his new club. Acquired Wednesday in the trade that sent Darius Miles to Portland, McInnis finished with nine points and six assists. "That's exactly what I was looking for," Silas said. "He had six assists and just one turnover. He got some big rebounds for us. The calmness that he has out there as a legitimate point - he knows how to get people involved." "It was like a sprint for the first eight minutes," Boozer said. "It's a great change of pace for us." Two free throws by Wagner capped a 13-2 burst that gave Cleveland its largest lead at 52-32 with 2:38 left in the second quarter. Iverson's big third quarter helped Philadelphia cut the deficit to six points, but Williams answered with one of his four 3-pointers for a 74-65 advantage. "Pretty much every time I've got the ball in the post, teams have been double-teaming me, so I've been just trying to get a clean look at the rim from the outside," Williams said. Glenn Robinson scored 20 points for Philadelphia, which got no closer than five points in the final minute.
