Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies are not known for their defense, but that is what has keyed the longest winning streak in team history. Bonzi Wells scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift added 15 apiece as the Grizzlies dominated the second half en route their eighth consecutive win, a 106-88 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Memphis entered Sunday as one of just nine teams in the league to allow more than 95 points per game but it is quickly becoming a solid defensive team. After starting their streak with a pair of high-scoring overtime wins, the Grizzlies have surrendered less than 89 points in their last six. "Coach puts an emphasis on a lot of defensive plays," Wells said. "We try to get a lot of hustle points and hustle stats and don't let guys get easy lanes to the basket. That philosophy right there makes our team defense a lot better." Memphis never led in the first half and trailed by as many as 11 but allowed just 39 points after halftime, including 18 in the decisive third quarter. The Grizzlies made 13-of-19 shots in the third period and held the Nuggets to 6-of-17, turning a seven-point halftime deficit into a 76-67 cushion. Swift scored seven points and Gasol had six in the quarter. "In the second half, we went right back to the main things we had to do," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "We pulled the defense all the way back and tried to make them play out of the lane. We bumped people, stepped back and were able to make baskets." Memphis shot 70 percent (26-of-37) from the floor in the second half led by Wells, who made 6-of-8 from the floor. Denver shot less than 43 percent (15-of-35) in the final 24 minutes. "It's the team defense," said Grizzlies forward Bo Outlaw, who had 11 points. "We play aggressively on defense because we know help is behind. It make you a lot more comfortable when you are guarding your man." Lorenzen Wright and Mike Miller each added 12 points for Memphis, which shot 55 percent (41-of-74) overall and had seven players in double figures. The Grizzlies extended their franchise-record home winning streak to seven games, improving to 16-5 at the Pyramid this season. Rookie Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points and Andre Miller added 18 for the Nuggets, who have lost a season-high two straight games for the seventh time this season. "(The Grizzlies) outhustled us, outdefended us, outcoached us and outplayed us in the second half," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "It's a 48-minute game; you have to play the whole game." Anthony scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the second half, but his teammates combined to make just 9-of-27 shots for only 23 points.
