Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Dajuan Wagner and the Cleveland Cavaliers are rounding into shape. Wagner floated home the go-ahead basket with 7.4 seconds to go and Ira Newble had a block at the buzzer as the Cavaliers ran their winning streak to three games with a 94-93 triumph over the Miami Heat. Trailing, 93-92, with 35 seconds to go, the Cavaliers tried to work a pick-and-roll with Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who scored a season-high 30 points. When rookie LeBron James could not work free, the ball ended up in the hands of Wagner, who missed a 3-pointer. Kevin Ollie ran down the rebound and got the ball back to Wagner, who sliced through the lane and lofted the go-ahead basket. "I wanted that three," Wagner said. "I thought it was going in. I was happy to get a second chance." After a timeout, a bad pass by Miami's Lamar Odom resulted in rookie Dwyane Wade rushing a last-second shot under the hoop that Newble blocked from behind just before time expired. "We probably didn't give it enough time to develop," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We were trying to get the ball to Eddie (Jones) on that side of the floor with a lot of room. They were playing the cut very physically because they had a foul to give." "The play we drew up was a great play," Jones said. "I just wish me and Lamar got on the same page." The Cavaliers (17-28) have won three in a row for the second time this season and matched their win total from a season ago. "There's nothing magical about it," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "I feel it. It's starting to come. It feeds off itself. Our confidence is at an all-time high." Cleveland, which was without starting forward Carlos Boozer, has won five of its last six and Wagner is a big reason why, averaging over 16 points in his last five games. The Cavaliers improved to 7-5 with Wagner, a 6-2 combo guard who missed the first 33 games recovering from a right knee injury. "You can't guard him," Cleveland forward Eric Williams said. "He's starting to shoot the three with confidence. He's capable of coming off the bench and scoring a quick 20 points. We want him to get his confidence back because we know we're going to need him." "He creates and penetrates so well," Newble said. "He can break his man down and create for himself or his teammates. He's hard to guard." Jones scored 16 points for Miami, which played without center Brian Grant and had a three-game winning streak snapped. Van Gundy used just eight players but got 31 points from reserves Wade, rookie Udonis Haslem and Wang Zhi-Zhi. Ilgauskas made 14-of-16 shots and grabbed 11 rebounds. Teammate LeBron James scored 11 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, when Cleveland erased an 11-point deficit. "I love (playing in close games)," James said. "They're fun. A blowout is great, but when you're in the heat of the battle and every bucket counts, that's the best feeling." Wagner, who had seven points over the final 12 minutes, drilled a 3-pointer for an 88-86 lead with 3:59 remaining and neither team led by more than four the rest of the way.
