Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Mike James could not quite make John Carroll's NBA coaching debut a successful one. James made two 3-pointers in the final 18 seconds but missed a tying attempt at the buzzer as the Celtics fell to the Detroit Pistons, 106-103, for their sixth loss in eight games. Carroll was named interim coach of the Celtics for the remainder of the season on Tuesday when Jim O'Brien shockingly resigned, citing philosopical differences with executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge. A seven-year assistant with the Celtics, Carroll had never coached an NBA game, although he helmed the Duquesne University program from 1989-95. "It was one of the most enjoyable nights I've had as a basketball coach," Carroll said. "I'm really extremely proud of how hard they played for me and for our coaching staff. And hopefully they'll continue to do that." "One of the better guys in the league got fired, or left," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "I'm happy for John and all those guys, but to see coach Harter (Celtics assistant Dick Harter, who was fired Tuesday) and Jimmy O'Brien out of our league, there is really something wrong somewhere." Chauncey Billups and Mehmet Okur scored 21 points apiece to pace the Pistons, who had lost three in a row following a franchise record-tying 13-game winning streak. Richard Hamilton added 17 points and Ben Wallace, who overcame an illness, chipped in 14 and 15 rebounds. Detroit trailed, 93-90, before Wallace made two free throws, Billups nailed a 3-pointer and Wallace - a 58 percent free-throw shooter - sank another pair from the stripe to give Detroit a 97-93 lead with 1:34 remaining. "Obviously, Ben Wallace has worked at his free-throw shooting, but that's the game of basketball," Carroll said. "Just when you least expect something, something pops up and you've got to deal with it." The Pistons held a 100-95 lead before James made a 3-pointer with just under 18 seconds left. The deficit was 104-100 before James hit another long shot with 8.7 seconds to go. Billups was fouled and sank a pair from the line before James raced upcourt and front-rimmed a shot just before the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. "Man, it felt good, I got a good look," said James, who scored nine points. "I was in a good rhythm, and it just didn't go down." "Guys were coming up with big shots down the stretch and that's our MO - that's how we've been winning all year," Billups said. "You don't want to foul them, stop the clock, and make the game longer. Make them take the shot." Paul Pierce scored 26 points and Jiri Welsch added 19 for the Celtics, who held a 44-37 lead before the Pistons went on a 31-10 run bridging the second and third quarters. Billups gave Detroit its biggest lead, 68-54, on a jump shot with 6:05 left in the third period. The Pistons held an 88-82 edge before the Celtics embarked on an 11-2 run, taking a 93-90 lead on a pair of free throws by Welsch with 2:56 remaining.
