Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The reeling Philadelphia 76ers appeared on their way to another dispiriting loss when Aaron McKie decided to do something about it. McKie led a late rally and made the game-winning jumper with 7.1 seconds left, giving the 76ers an 85-82 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. "I wasn't trying to go out there and be the hero," McKie said. "I was just going out there and just play like me." The 76ers had dropped seven of their last eight games to fall out of the playoff picture in the weak Eastern Conference. Superstar guard Allen Iverson was nursing injuries and forward Glenn Robinson was questioning his role with the team. Philadelphia made just one basket in the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter and trailed, 81-75, when Robinson began a closing 10-1 surge with a jumper at the 2:40 mark. McKie, playing down the stretch in place of point guard Eric Snow, made a steal that led to a basket by Kenny Thomas, then tied it with a baseline jumper with 1:35 to play. A free throw by Baron Davis, who scored 19 points, ended a drought of nearly five minutes and gave New Orleans an 82-81 lead with 34 seconds remaining. But McKie sank his 18-footer, bringing his teammates off the bench in celebration. "I was just trying to clear the lane for the big guys coming down the floor," McKie said. "Glenn got double-teamed and I slid over in the corner and they found me and I made the shot." "He's starting to get a little zip back and I thought he did a good job on that last play," 76ers coach Randy Ayers said. Jamal Mashburn, who made the game-winning shot in his season debut Wednesday, was harassed into a miss by Thomas. Samuel Dalembert rebounded, and his two free throws with a second left sealed the win. "I had a good look, a good enough look to hit it," said Mashburn, who scored 20 points on 10-of-26 shooting. "I hit those before and it just didn't go in. I've always accepted the challenge of taking the last shot." Iverson had 31 points, eight assists and four steals for Philadelphia, which won despite a season-low 30 points in the second half. McKie, a former Sixth Man Award winner but a forgotten man during the recent slump, scored nine points. "That's basketball," McKie said. "That's fun, when you go out there and just grind it out and scratch and claw and get out on the floor. You just go out there and just play." "What it does is that is gives us a little more confidence than we've been having," said Iverson, who missed the last two games with a finger injury. "Losing the way we're been losing and to play one of the top teams in the East that is playing well, with both of their players back on the floor together, I think it was good for us." Iverson scored 23 points in the first half as Philadelphia opened a 55-44 lead. New Orleans pulled within one in the third quarter before missing its last eight shots of the period. The Hornets scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to erase a 71-65 deficit. Baskets by Jamaal Magloire and P.J. Brown made it 81-75 with 5:13 to go, but New Orleans did not make another basket. "I thought they played with a lot of fight and heart down the stretch for a group that had lost seven out of eight," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. Philadelphia's frontcourt of Robinson, Thomas and Dalembert each had double-doubles. Magloire had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Brown 12 and 10 for New Orleans.
