Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- In a game of back-and-forth runs, Larry Hughes and the Washington Wizards saved their best for the fourth quarter. Hughes scored 23 points, including a huge 3-pointer with just over a minute to play, as the Wizards defeated the Phoenix Suns, 105-100. Washington dominated the final period, using a 34-14 run over the last 7:40 to erase a 15-point deficit. Phoenix had trailed by six points at halftime before going on a 15-1 spurt in the third period. "It seems like we play hard when we're down," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "I don't know if that's sign of youth or not having confidence or panic. That's just who we are right now." "These kinds of games will literally kill you," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. Washington center Brendan Haywood's follow slam with 2:12 to play vaulted Washington into a 92-91 lead, their first since early in the third quarter. Then the University of Maryland connection of Juan Dixon and Steve Blake took over. After Phoenix's Shawn Marion missed a jumper, Dixon penetrated and found an open Hughes in the left corner for a 3-pointer with 1:12 left. Following Joe Johnson's missed free throw, rookie Blake closed the barrage with a 3-pointer to give Washington a 98-92 lead with 47 seconds to go. "We feed off Blake and (Dixon)," said Haywood. "They have been playing great off each other all year long. They really spearheaded things and put us in the right direction." "It feels good to play well in the fourth quarter as a team," Blake said. "Guys made big shots, we got good defensive rebounds, and it was nice for me to hit some shots and contribute to it." Dixon was a first-round choice in 2002. Blake was a second-rounder last year. Kwame Brown scored 19 points and 10 rebounds and Blake was 3-of-3 from the arc for 13 points for Washington. Washington had a season high 59 rebounds in outrebounding Phoenix 59-41. "The big guys were back there controlling the basket," Hughes said. "We were able to pressure up and force guys to the rim, and they were right there contesting everybody." Johnson tied a career high with 28 points and had a career-high nine assists. Shawn Marion added 24 points for the Suns, who fall to 1-3 on their five-game road trip. "We just came apart," Marion said "We were holding the ball and trying to dribble around in circles and stuff. We can't be doing that. That killed us right there." "They got some key steals and made some big shots on the offensive end," said Johnson. "We gave them control of the basketball game." The Wizards are 2-2 on their season-high seven-game homestand. They have now beaten the Suns four straight times at the MCI Center.
