Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Memphis Grizzlies guard Bonzi Wells tested the toughness of the Utah Jazz, which was a big mistake. An incident between Wells and Jarron Collins sparked a decisive run by the Jazz, who dominated the backboards in an 85-79 victory over the Grizzlies. Andrei Kirilenko scored 21 points and Raja Bell added 18 off the bench for Utah, which displayed some of the toughness coach Jerry Sloan has been looking for all season. The Jazz grabbed 44 rebounds while holding the Grizzlies to a season-low 26. "The last game they got physical with us and we backed away," said Jazz center Greg Ostertag, who had seven rebounds. "This time, we didn't. Today we came right back at them and played." Midway through the second quarter, Wells did not take kindly to a foul by Collins and threw the ball at the bigger player. Collins shoved Wells and both players received technical fouls before order was restored. Bell drilled a 3-pointer to give the Jazz the lead for good at 31-30 and start an 11-2 spurt that closed the half and gave Utah a 39-32 lead. He added two free throws and a layup in the run. "This time we were ready," said Kirilenko, who had nine rebounds. "We were trying to play with the same aggressiveness. If they were going to play tough - grab us, hold us - then we were going to play like that as well." The Grizzlies managed just one basket in the last six minutes of the second quarter and never recovered. They were manhandled throughout and got no closer than five points, falling to 16-7 at home. "They play real physical, and that was their chance to win the game," said Grizzlies 7-foot forward Pau Gasol, who made just 1-of-9 shots and grabbed just two rebounds. "They knew that, they did a good job of it, and they never quit pounding the glass." Memphis was outrebounded, 16-5, on the offensive end, leading to a 16-6 advantage in second-chance points for Utah. "We only had five offensive rebounds," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "You get five blindfolded; five fall into your hands." "We don't shoot straight sometimes, so we've had to become a good offensive rebounding team," Ostertag said. "We just make a real effort to go the offensive glass." Carlos Arroyo scored 18 points for the Jazz, who improved to just 5-16 on the road. James Posey scored 24 points and Wells added 14 for the Grizzlies, who were held to a season-low eight points in the second quarter. Memphis played without swingman Mike Miller, who sat out with back spasms.
