Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Richard Hamilton made amends for a crucial missed free throw by taking control in overtime. After misfiring on a potential game-sealing free throw in the fourth quarter, Hamilton scored all of the Detroit Pistons' points in the extra period en route to a 90-89 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The Pistons had an 82-79 edge with 12 seconds left in regulation after Hamilton - a career 85 percent free-throw shooter - made only 1-of-2 free throws, giving the Raptors a chance. Vince Carter took advantage, burying a 3-pointer with five seconds left to force overtime. Hamilton responded by dominating the final five minutes, scoring eight of his 28 points. Toronto had an 89-86 edge with 61 seconds left, but Hamilton made a driving layup and gave Detroit the lead for good at 90-89 with 22 seconds to go. "When I missed that free throw, I told myself, 'If we lose this, it isn't going to be because of me,'" Hamilton said. "I just kept being aggressive, attacking and not settling. The guys did a good job of giving me the ball in open spots." Toronto missed three shots on its next possession, and a scramble under the basket resulted in a jump ball. The Raptors won the tip and got the ball to Carter, who had his jumper from the left baseline blocked by fellow All-Star Ben Wallace as time expired. "I was just trying to put a hand between the ball and the rim," said Wallace, who had 18 rebounds and three blocks. "That's where I make my statement - at the defensive end. Getting a block at the end of the game, that's my satisfaction right there." "That is why he is an All-Star," Carter said. "Maybe I could have pulled up one dribble earlier, but I did not even see him in the picture. I thought where I stopped was good enough." Chauncey Billups scored 19 points and Mehmet Okur added 16 for Detroit, which has bounced back from a three-game slide with consecutive wins. "It's a great win after the disappointment we had last week," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "For us to go into overtime, the team was really down, but the team responded." Carter finished with 31 points and rookie Chris Bosh added 13 and 13 rebounds for Toronto, which lost for the sixth time in seven games. The Pistons rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit and reeled off six straight points to take a 77-71 lead with five minutes left in regulation. They were sparked by Bob Sura, who had five of his nine points in the period and helped shut down Carter. Carter finally broke loose in the final minutes, making a jumper and an acrobatic layup in a span of 43 seconds to keep the Raptors within two before sinking the game-tying shot from the arc. "This game should have been won in regulation," Carter said. "We just got a little comfortable and relaxed with a 14-point lead."
