Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury had a big game in his first matchup against his former team to help the New York Knicks snap their two-game home losing streak. Marbury hit five 3-pointers and scored 35 points to lift the Knicks to a 110-105 victory over the Phoenix Suns. "I've been in zones before and I really didn't feel like I was in a zone today," Marbury said. "I just wanted to win tonight." Keith Van Horn also had five 3-pointers and tied his season high with 30 points for New York. Penny Hardaway added 13 points for the Knicks, which improved to 8-6 since the deal. Marbury and Hardaway were acquired by the Knicks from the Suns in a huge eight-player deal January 5. One of the players shipped to Phoenix was guard Howard Eisley, who overcame the boos from the Madison Square Garden crowd to score 13 points. Joe Johnson scored a career-high 31 points for the Suns, who completed a 1-4 road trip. Jake Voskuhl scored 18 points while Shawn Marion had 16 and 14 rebounds. "I was riding Joe like a big horse," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He had to clean the boards, score and guard Stephon and I tried to save Joe as much as I could. He did a good job tonight." Johnson hit the first of two free throws to cut the deficit to 106-103 with 21 seconds left. He missed the second, but Suns guard Casey Jacobsen stole the ball from Van Horn and was fouled. But Jacobsen missed both free throws and the Knicks hit four foul shots to preserve their lead. "It's tough as far as the game was concerned," Johnson said. "I wish we would have won the game. We just came up short we have to continue to move on." The game might have been somewhat emotional for Marbury's replacement, Suns rookie guard Leandro Barbosa. He developed a good relationship with Marbury in their short time as teammates and cried when he heard about the trade. \ Barbosa finished with nine points and six assists in 34 minutes but was lit up by Marbury. "Barbosa is really like my little brother," Marbury said. "It was business tonight. It wasn't personal." Marbury seemed motivated by facing his former team. He attacked the defense early and often, scoring 18 points in the second quarter as the Knicks built a 58-53 halftime lead. The Knicks were without All-Star guard Allan Houston, who is out indefinitely with a sore right knee. Shandon Anderson replaced him and had nine points. "They did a good job," Voskuhl said. "Every time we got close, they'd come down and hit a big three or get a big bucket." New York went on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to build a 98-90 lead with 7:46 left.
