Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan didn't get much help from his teammates for three quarters. In the fourth period, they decided to contribute. Duncan scored 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Tony Parker scored 10 of his 20 points in the final period as the Spurs edged the Utah Jazz, 85-81. The Spurs have beaten the Jazz 15 straight times and 11 in a row at San Antonio, although this one was a battle. "It was a great game both ways," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "I believe Utah is the best executing basketball team in the game, the state, the country. They do it for 48 minutes. They've always been my standard to look at with my team." Duncan had 28 points through three quarters, making a barrage of mid-range jumpers. In the final period, Parker scored eight straight points for the Spurs, good for a 74-67 lead with 3:15 to play. "Tonight we were aggressive," Parker said. "The team and I were basically just trying to help Timmy. They came to play and we matched their intensity." The Jazz refused to quit and closed to 76-74 on Jarron Collins' free throws with 51 seconds to play. The Spurs then turned to their two-time MVP. From the left wing, Duncan gave Greg Ostertag several jab steps before rising up for a trademark bank shot that gave San Antonio a four-point cushion with 35 seconds left. "Right now my shots are feeling good, so I'm taking them when they're there," Duncan said. "I know people are going to double-team me, so I'm trying to take quicker shots. I'm just playing within the system." "You double him (Duncan), you go zone, you do whatever you have to do to try and stop him and they have other guys that will beat you," Utah coach Jerry Slaon said. "They are so tough in that way." Manu Ginobili made 6-of-6 foul shots in the final 21 seconds to put away the Jazz, who have not beaten the Spurs since February 6, 2000. "(Manu) showed maturity and presence of mind to knock those shots down," Popovich said. Carlos Arroyo and Andrei Kirilenko led the Jazz with 13 points apiece. "We let the shot clock run down a few too many times," Arroyo said. "Perhaps we need to be a bit more selfish in that regard." San Antonio begins a season-high seven game road trip on Monday while the San Antonio Stockshow and Rodeo visits the SBC Center. The Spurs return home February 24. Last year, the Spurs were 8-1 on their season-high nine-game road trip, which served as a springboard to their championship. "It's a good learning experience for us," Duncan said. "Hopefully we can go on the same run (as last year) and have the same result."
