Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After the Los Angeles Clippers lost their leading scorer in the first half, Elton Brand and Marko Jaric were quick to pick up the slack. Corey Maggette went down with a sprained right ankle midway through the second quarter, but Brand scored 22 points and Jaric added 20 to lead the Clippers past the Atlanta Hawks, 101-95. The win was the first for Los Angeles in Atlanta since March 25, 1994, a span of eight games. The victory also gives the Clippers their first season sweep over the Hawks in the 33-year history of the series. "We played the right way down the stretch of the game," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We controlled the tempo of the game, Elton made the right plays down the stretch." "We came in here needing a victory," Jaric said. "We did all right except for a couple of mistakes in the first quarter, other than that we played a perfect game." Brand's jumper with 4:26 to play extended the Clippers lead to 95-87 - their biggest lead since the first quarter - and the Hawks got no closer than five points the rest of the way. "I just wanted to get the ball in my hands," Brand said. Brand, who had 15 points in the first half, played a strong all-around game adding 12 rebounds, six assits, and two steals. Jaric led the Clippers with five steals. Chris Wilcox had 18 points and Quentin Richardson added 14 and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who improved to 2-1 on their NBA season-high nine-game road trip. "2-1 feels good," said Brand. "We got two in a row. It's important, (this road trip) could make or break our season." Shareef-Abdur Rahim and Stephen Jackson led Atlants with 20 points apiece. Atlanta once again failed to win back-to-back games and is the only NBA team this season not to do so. The Hawks inexplicably fell to 4-17 against teams with a losing record. Jackson, who spent last season with the world champion San Antonio Spurs, was at a loss for words. "Why don't you guys watch the game and answer your own questions?" Jackson said. "We say the same thing every night. We can't say what we want to say, at least I can't." "We hung our heads a little too early," Atlanta guard Dion Glover said. Maggette left the game with 7:49 left in the second quarter, scoring nine points in 13 minutes. He is listed as doubtful for the Clippers game Wednesday at Boston. The announced crowd was 8,508, but estimates pegged the attendance at less than 2,500. "I haven't seen a crowd like that, since I don't know when - not even college," Clippers guard Eddie House said.
