Game StoryPHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Houston Rockets had problems getting airborne. Then, they were grounded by Shawn Marion, Joe Johnson and the Phoenix Suns. Marion totaled 31 points and eight rebounds as the Suns easily defeated the struggling Rockets, 99-79. Houston played without All-Star guard Steve Francis, who was suspended one game by the team for missing the flight to Phoenix on Sunday night. He also missed the Rockets' season-high fourth straight loss. Johnson scored 27 points, tied a career high with 10 assists and added eight rebounds as the Suns snapped a three-game losing streak. Johnson has scored 20 or more points in six straight games and 11 of 12 overall. Marion had his fourth 30-point game of the season. He scored 18 in the second half, on 7-of-10 shooting. He was 13-of-23 for the game. "We came out tonight with an attitude, we wanted to win," Marion said. "We kept our composure and didn't let the lead slip away. They are a good team with or without Steve." Aided by the absence of Francis, Phoenix's starting backcourt of Johnson and Leandro Barbosa outscored Cuttino Mobley and Mark Jackson, 40-18. Mobley was 5-of-18 from the field. "It hurt, it always hurts when you don't have one of your best not there," Mobley said of the suspension. "That is no excuse. We should play hard and I don't think we played hard as a group." The Suns' defense held the Rockets to 11 points in the first quarter - a season-best - en route to a 17-point lead at the end of 12 minutes. Phoenix led from start to finish. "I am really just proud of the effort," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Defensively, the first quarter was probably the best we played all year. There's not a whole lot to say, they did a heck of a job." Leading, 73-58, after three quarters, the Suns' put the exclamation point on the victory with eight minutes left in the game. Jake Voskuhl started the play by blocking Clarence Weatherspoon's shot to Howard Eisley. Eisley then sped upcourt and found a hustling Voskuhl filling the lane for an emphatic dunk and a 81-64 lead. Phoenix has won three of its last four at home and play its next four games at America West Arena. The Suns lead the season series against Houston, 2-1. Houston trailed by only five points at the half but ultimately had no answer for the Suns, who held the Rockets to an opponent season-low 36 percent from the field. "We are not competing at a level that is acceptable in the NBA," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Mobley and Yao Ming had 16 points apiece for the Rockets. Jackson made his first start since April 17, 2002, when he was a member of the New York Knicks. "I think we were cocky," Yao said through an intrepreter. "Everybody knows that we are one of the best defensive teams, so they are going to try and come at us, and I don't think we were prepared." Phoenix played without forward Amare Stoudemire for the ninth straight game. The Suns are 7-21 without him.
