Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett kept the Minnesota Timberwolves rolling at home. Garnett collected 30 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Timberwolves to their 13th straight home win, a 113-100 victory over the Orlando Magic. "We're playing well, but what's most important to us is the defensive end," Garnett said. "We try to create some type of consistency on the defensive end. Some nights the ball goes in, and some nights it doesn't go in." Sam Cassell, named to his first All-Star Game earlier in the day, celebrated with 20 points and 10 assists as Minnesota won for the 13th time in 15 games. Latrell Sprewell added 25 points. Cassell has had All-Star-caliber seasons in the past and believes he should have made the team sooner. He dedicated this triumph to players who never made the All-Star game but should have. "This appearance is for myself, Rod Strickland and Derek Harper," Cassell said. "It's an honor that, in my eyes, should've been achieved (earlier). But it happens now, so I'll take it - enjoy the weekend and all the festivities." Harper retired in 1999 after a 16-year career. Strickland has six points and nine assists in 25 minutes for Orlando. Minnesota, which has not lost at the Target Center since December 9, swept the season series from Orlando for the first time in 13 years. The Timberwolves routed the Magic, 100-71, on November 7 after using a stifling zone defense to limit Tracy McGrady to four points. McGrady had considerably more success in this one, scoring 34 points on 12-of-31 shooting, but Orlando lost its third straight. Juwan Howard was the only other player in double figures for the Magic with 17 points. "As we know, they've got three big weapons that they can go to at any time," Howard said. "They can cause many problems for opposing defenses." Orlando climbed within 87-82 with 9:39 to play, but Minnesota used an 18-6 run over the next six minutes to build a 105-88 cushion. Garnett and McGrady also are headed to the All-Star game. Garnett will appear for the seventh time but was disappointed Sprewell did not make the team. "He said he's going to come to support us, but I just think that it's only right that he's there," Garnett said. "That's just my own personal feelings." The game was tied, 69-69, with 3 1/2 minutes left in the third. But Minnesota scored 17 of the next 20 points.
