Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Quentin Richardson more than made up for the absence of Corey Maggette. Richardson scored 14 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter and set a team record with eight 3-pointers to help the Los Angeles Clippers post a 95-86 victory over the Boston Celtics, their first in eight tries in the series. Richardson outscored the Celtics in the fourth quarter as he covered for Maggette, who averages 20 points per game but sprained his right ankle in Monday's win at Atlanta. Elton Brand collected 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Clippers, who improved to 3-1 on their NBA season-high nine-game road trip. Los Angeles trailed, 77-73, before Richardson scored on a fast-break dunk with 9:01 remaining to trigger an 18-5 run. He scored 12 points during the burst, which he capped by a pair of free throws that made it 91-82 with 3:43 left. Richardson set a franchise record by making eight 3-pointers in 11 attempts. He had two during the run before missing his last two shots from the arc. "Without Corey - I didn't go into the game necessarily thinking it was me, but Elton, Marko (Jaric) and the rest of those guys did a good job of finding me when I was open," Richardson said. "I feel like if I can get a couple of shots, my confidence is unbelievable and goes through the roof, and I do not feel like I can miss." "Quentin Richardson had it going from 3-point range, obviously," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "He was 8-for-10; one of those he just threw up before the shot clock expired. So he was honing in on his shot. ... Whatever his mental preparation was for this game, I'd like to see him do it again." Boston scored just 12 points in the fourth quarter en route to its season-high fifth straight defeat and ninth in 11 games. All-Star Paul Pierce, who was guarding Richardson, scored 22 points and Jiri Welsch added 20 for the Celtics, who are 0-4 under interim coach John Carroll. "Right now we are going through some adversity and this is the time when you find out what kind of team you got, what type of character you have as an individual and as a team," Pierce said. "It's been a rough time. I can't tell you I haven't been frustrated - I am and have been at times - but I know we are going to turn things around." "We'll keep working at it," Carroll said. "You find out a lot about people when you're losing. Winning's easy and losing's just horrible, but we have a game on Friday (vs. Atlanta) and we need to work a little harder to get better." The Clippers converted 19 Boston turnovers into 31 points, while the Celtics managed just six points off 16 Los Angeles giveaways. "The difference in the game was that we scored 31 points off turnovers," Dunleavy said. "Guys did a nice job there; we did a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second half also." "We turned the ball over way too many times," Carroll said. "We not only turned the ball over but those turnovers lead to 31 points. You can't give up 17 offensive rebounds, you can't turn the ball over almost 20 times to lead to 31 points and expect to win."
