Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs found it easier to play at Arco Arena when they kept the crowd quiet. Tim Duncan had 28 points and 14 rebounds and Tony Parker scored nine of his 20 points in a pivotal first quarter as the Spurs held on for a 102-94 victory over the Sacramento Kings, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. The Kings have the best home record in the NBA at 22-4 but they have trouble winning here against the Spurs, who have won their last three visits to Arco Arena. They are the only team in the NBA that has not lost at Arco Arena since the start of last season. San Antonio quieted the crowd early in this one as Parker and Duncan combined to scored 17 points in the first quarter. The Spurs made 14-of-24 shots in the first quarter while the Kings struggled, shooting only 9-of-23. "With the crowd they have here, it's big to get out to a good start," Duncan said. "I thought we did just that. Luckily enough, we came out on top." Duncan scored 13 points in the third quarter as San Antonio took the lead for good, carrying a 73-65 cushion into the fourth. "I tried to be more aggressive in the second half," Duncan said. "I thought in the first half I was settling for my jump shot a little too much and letting them off the hook. So I thought I'd take it to the basket and draw some double-teams." The Spurs had their largest lead at 93-75 with five minutes left and held on despite a furious rally from the Kings, who scored 19 points in the final 4:34. Manu Ginobili scored 15 points off the bench and Bruce bowen added 14 for San Antonio, which shot just under 50 percent (40-of-81) from the floor but made just 14-of-25 free throws. "We're really thrilled to come away with a victory," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It's a heck of a tough place to play. We didn't shoot very well, but the defense hung in there. We played for four quarters and it worked out." All-Star Peja Stojakovic and Vlade Divac each scored 20 points to lead Sacramento, which was held to 37 percent (30-of-81) from the floor by the league's best defensive team. "It may be our worst offensive game all year," Kings coach Rick Adelman. "We just tried to do too much on our own. I thought a lot of it was our own impatience offensively." "I don't want to take away from them, but offensively we just didn't shoot the ball well," Divac said. "Under 40 percent is just miserable for us. San Antonio did play well, better than we did. They deserved to win." The Kings outscored the Spurs from the line, 28-14, but failed to make shots until the fourth quarter. They pulled within 96-90 with 1:40 left, but San Antonio's Robert Horry sealed it with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 85 seconds to go.
