Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- John Carroll's Boston Celtics became the latest team to get well against the sickly Philadelphia 76ers. Carroll notched his first win as the Celtics rode quick starts by Paul Pierce and Walter McCarty to a 110-80 rout of the 76ers that snapped a six-game losing streak. The Celtics had lost their first five games under Carroll, who was named coach after Jim O'Brien abruptly resigned last month. But they looked nothing like that club as they ambushed the Sixers moments after the opening tip. "It wasn't just that it was the first win, it was the quality of the game," Carroll said. "I just enjoyed watching our guys play basketball the way I had hoped they could play over the last week or so. They finally put it together tonight, and didn't look back once they did." Pierce scored 25 of his 35 points in the first half, helping Boston bolt to a 59-39 lead. He did most of his damage against the defenseless Glenn Robinson and is averaging 32.3 points in three games against Philadelphia this season. "It was a big win for us," Pierce said. "For one, it keeps us in the playoff race, takes us off the schneid. It was in a back-to-back situation on the road. I'm just happy guys stuck with it." McCarty came off the bench in the game's first minute as Chris Mihm got in early foul trouble. Normally a stationary 3-point shooter, McCarty had a terrific all-around game with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists and seven steals. "We were wonderful in terms of our hands, our activeness, our deflections," Carroll said. "Walter McCarty had seven steals, (and) we had 17 as a team. That was what we tried to do. It was a our game plan going in." The Celtics opened a 30-point lead midway through the third quarter, marking one of several times where the Sixers heard boos from the home crowd at the Wachovia Center. Two nights after posting its biggest win of the season over the undermanned Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia suffered its worst defeat in this building since it opened eight years ago. "These are the teams that you have to get up for," coach Randy Ayers said. "I knew that we would be up for the Lakers, even undermanned as they were. There are the games that you have to get up and get yourself in the right frame of mind to play." In losing for the 10th time in 13 games, the 76ers again displayed the same lack of heart that superstar guard Allen Iverson accused them of showing after Tuesday's home loss to Toronto. They committed a season-high 25 turnovers and shot just 38 percent (29-of-76) while allowing the Celtics to shoot 53 percent (38-of-72). "No. 1, we didn't shoot the ball," Ayers said. "No. 2, we turned the ball over. So, the combination of the two never allowed us to stay in the game for an extended period of time." Philadelphia has become a fine foe for teams that need fixing. In the last month, the 76ers have helped Orlando snap a nine-game road slide, Washington and Seattle end four-game skids and Cleveland win without LeBron James. "A lot of those teams are like us in a sense that they are fighting for their lives, too," Sixers guard Aaron McKie said. "It is a matter of throwing the ball out there and see who wants it more. Obviously, those guys wanted it more than us. At this point I don't know what to say." Pierce made 10-of-18 shots and 13-of-15 free throws, flashing his All-Star form. He scored 12 of the first 16 points, and McCarty drained two 3-pointers as Boston opened a 24-7 lead. Philadelphia closed to 27-23 late in the first quarter but got no closer. McCarty's hoop rebuilt the advantage to 50-33 in the second period. "(They) jumped on us so fast and we just weren't able to recover," said Iverson, who scored 15 points on just 5-of-20 shooting. "They got the momentum right from the start. You always get a good feeling about a team that is hitting jump shots in the beginning because as the game progresses, they'll start missing some shots. But it didn't happen."
