Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks jumped quickly on the New Orleans Hornets and jumped over them in the Central Division standings. All-Star Michael Redd and Brian Skinner fueled a big first quarter as the Bucks continued their home dominance and climbed into third place with a 107-97 victory over the Hornets. Redd scored eight of his 25 points and Skinner eight of his 17 in the opening period, when the Bucks opened a 30-20 lead. They never trailed as they won their fifth straight game at the Bradley Center and improved to 20-5 at home, the best mark in the Eastern Conference. "We seem to do better at home, our confidence and the mental aspect of being at home really helps us a lot," Redd said. "We just feel like we can't lose at home sometimes." "I don't know why we struggle so much on the road, but just our body language at home, we have a little more bounce in our step and we play with more intensity and more confidence," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. Returning from a winless three-game road trip, Milwaukee (27-23) moved past New Orleans (27-24) and would have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs if the season ended today. "We've played 50 games, so it's not too early to think about that," said forward Joe Smith, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds. "It's all about trying to position yourself. We only have 32 games left, so we need to do the best job possible to stay where we're at - or even move up more." "We can't be concerned about that yet," guard Damon Jones said. We just need to take one game at a time and try to improve each game." All-Star Jamaal Magloire scored 20 points for the Hornets, who have lost five of their last six games, a slide that began after a 101-100 home win over the Bucks on January 28. "You have to get stops if you expect to win games," Magloire said. "We need to do a better job on the defensive end of the floor." Milwaukee made nine of its first 15 shots, racing to an 18-5 lead in the first 5 1/2 minutes. During that span, New Orleans missed 5-of-6 shots and committed five turnovers. The first quarter was as well as we've played defensively," Porter said. "We got a lot of steals and got out in the open court, and that really helped us get in an offensive flow. The Hornets closed to 52-46 at halftime, but the Bucks scored the first four points of the second half to rebuild the lead to double digits. Redd scored 12 points in the third period. He had a flying one-handed follow dunk and Tim Thomas added a 3-pointer for a 74-59 bulge with 2:22 left. That was part of a 16-4 spurt that closed the quarter and gave Milwaukee an 83-63 lead.
