Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Playing once again without Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers didn't need any late-game heroics. Shaquille O'Neal and Derek Fisher made sure of that. O'Neal and Fisher scored 16 straight points for the Lakers in a game-ending 20-6 run that provided a 98-83 victory over the struggling Miami Heat. After Rafer Alston's 3-pointer cut Miami's deficit to 78-77 with 7:13 remaining, Fisher scored the next eight points to give the Lakers their biggest lead at 86-77. Then O'Neal took over. The 7-2 center capped the duo's scoring binge with a steal and thunderous dunk for a 92-83 lead with 1:32 to play. Miami got no closer. "They (The Heat) awoke a sleeping giant out there tonight and it was just a matter of making a statement and producing," O'Neal said. O'Neal scored 25 points and Fisher added a season-high 18 off the bench for the Lakers, who improved to 4-2 on their seven-game road trip without Kobe Bryant. The superstar guard, sidelined with a lacerated finger, has not played the last two game despite eligible to come off the injured list. "I love playing in the Miami humidity," Fisher said. "Once I got lathered up, I felt good and it all seemed to be working for me." Devean George had 17 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Lakers' reserves outscore the Heat's bench, 43-26. "We're starting to jell as a team," George said. "I feel like Derek and I came off the bench and showed what we are capable of doing." The Heat jumped to an early 14-point lead, but a 15-0 run by the Lakers bridging the first and second quarters gave them a 24-23 lead, and they never trailed again. Laker guard Gary Payton scored eight point during that early run and finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. "When Shaq wakes up, we wake up," Payton said. "This road trip was a big test for us, and we're doing pretty well. We've got momentum going now and we know what it takes to be successful." O'Neal began to get hot in the third quarter, scoring 11 of the Lakers' 17 points. "Shaquille got rolling in the second half and became the domiannt player," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "We had a mediocre start, but after that I thought we played 40 minutes of very good basketball. Rookie Dwyane Wade scored 19 points and Lamar Odom collected 13 and 11 rebounds for Miami, which has lost five straight games. The losing streak is the longest since the Heat lost seven straight to open the season. Wade has scored in double figures 21 of the last 22 games. "We gave a pretty good effort for 30 minutes, but we didn't give the effort for the full 48 and that was the difference," Wade said. "The Lakers played as well as I've seen them play in the last two weeks," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. Los Angeles swept the season series with Miami for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. Heat forward Caron Butler left the game with 6 1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter with an injured back after being fouled hard earlier by Lakers guard Kareem Rush.
