Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett made sure that the Minnesota Timberwolves bounced back from a rare loss at home. Garnett had 31 points on 15-of-21 shooting and 16 rebounds to lift the Timberwolves to a 96-84 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. "That's what a loss did to us," Garnett said. "We had to re-evaluate ourselves. It made us that much more hungry. I think that's what you all saw tonight." Minnesota had its 14-game home winning streak snapped with Sunday's 99-98 loss to Memphis. The Timberwolves had not lost back-to-back home games since November 26-December 9. Latrell Sprewell added 17 points and Gary Trent contributed 15 off the bench for Minnesota, which has won the first three meetings of the season against the Clippers. "We had a better start tonight," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "We had a good practice yesterday and were ready." All-Star Sam Cassell scored just eight points but passed for 12 of Minnesota's 29 assists and efficiently ran the offense. "That's my job," Cassell said. "I do what I have to do. I'm nursing a sore elbow, so I do what I've got to do. The opposition doesn't know how bad I'm hurt, so they're going to allow me to make plays for my teammates." Corey Maggette scored a season-high 34 points for Los Angeles, which dropped its sixth straight meeting with Minnesota and fell to 3-4 on its season-high nine-game road trip. Guard Quentin Richardson was limited to just 12 minutes because of a groin injury and went scoreless. The Clippers cut the deficit to 78-71 with 9:46 remaining. The Timberwolves responded with a 12-4 run to build a 90-75 lead with 4:22 to go. "They jumped on us early," Maggette said. "I think that their main goal tonight was to start early, so they came out and made a big run on us. We kept fighting; we just missed a lot of shots." Garnett punished the Clippers inside from the start, scoring 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds in the first quarter. Trent seemed to pick up the pace whenever Garnett wasn't scoring inside as the veteran reserve collected 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the first half. Los Angeles kept the game close behind Maggette's hot hand. He scored 16 points in the second half but got very little help. "Kevin Garnett is one of the most complete players and Sprewell is one of those types of players too," Maggette said. "They have so many guys that know how to play and have such great veteran leadership, so it's tough." Garnett threw down a monstrous dunk over Predrag Drobjnak with 28 seconds left in the third to give Minnesota a 78-67 lead, slamming the ball so hard he lost a sneaker in the process.
