Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn and the New Orleans Hornets may be a force in the Eastern Conference after all. Mashburn scored 20 points and Robert Traylor provided a lift off the bench as the Hornets cruised to an 89-75 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Expected to be among the favorites in the East this season, the Hornets have battled injuries and been relegated to fighting for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Tuesday's win moved New Orleans within 9 1/2 games of the conference-leading Pacers in the Central Division. "This is a huge win for us," Traylor said. "We wanted to make a statement. We wanted to be able to start the second half of the season off right." Mashburn, among the top players in the conference when healthy, missed the first 2 1/2 months of the season after undergoing right knee surgery. He had his way with the Pacers on Tuesday, making 9-of-20 shots and grabbing seven rebounds. "Every good team wants to get off to a good start in the second half and have some momentum right after the break," Mashburn said. "We're not going to worry about how many games back we are. We just do what we have to do. It doesn't matter what seed we are in the playoffs." "Of course it's great to have him back and now it's time for our team to take advantage of our experience throughout the rest of the season," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. Traylor was the spark off the bench, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. He helped the Hornets to a 44-20 advantage in points in the paint and commanding 56-38 rebounding margin. "The last two games they beat us up in the paint pretty good," Traylor said. "We wanted to get after it tonight, be real aggressive, especially near the basket." "Give New Orleans credit, they played a dominant game," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "Physically they pounded us. Statistically when you give up 20 offensive rebounds for 22 points you're going to struggle." All-Star Baron Davis added 19 points and eight assists for the Hornets, who led virtually the entire way en route to their first win in three tries against the Pacers this season. It was a forgettable night for Pacers All-Star Ron Artest, who was benched at the start for missing practice on Monday night. He missed his first six shots and went 1-of-10 from the field in 31 minutes. "Distractions didn't help the situation, but you can't blame this on one guy," Carlisle said. "We all own it. We're going to have to get the wheels back on the wagon." Fellow All-Star Jermaine O'Neal scored 17 points to lead Indiana, which managed just 30 points in the second half and had a three-game winning streak stopped. Davis hit 1-of-2 free throws with 5:39 left in the first quarter, giving the Hornets the lead for good. They held a 27-22 lead after one quarter. Traylor had a dunk and made a free throw and Mashburn drilled a jumper, triggering a 15-4 run to start the second quarter that helped the Hornets open a 42-26 lead. They settled for a 53-45 advantage at the break. Mashburn fueled another run that put away the game as he scored eight points in a 16-8 surge to open the third quarter that gave the Hornets a 71-53 bulge. "Tonight was one of those games where we wanted to stay close and have a chance at the end, but we were able to break through early and get that big lead on them," Davis said. "We got off to good starts in both halves and were able to hold off the runs they made in the second and third quarter." The Pacers got no closer than 13 points the rest of the way as they struggled offensively. They made just 9-of-31 shots in the second half, including a woeful 1-of-10 mark from 3-point range.
