Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Baron Davis and the New Orleans Hornets dropped another 20-point beating on the Washington Wizards. Davis had 23 points and 13 assists as the hot-shooting Hornets used a 37-point third quarter to race to their third straight win, a 120-98 trouncing of the Wizards. Jamal Mashburn scored a season-high 26 points and Darrell Armstrong added 18 for the Hornets, who shot 55 percent (48-of-87) from the field, their second-best mark of the season. New Orleans made 10-of-19 3-pointers and established season highs for points and field goals. "Baron is penetrating. He's getting it inside," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. "He's making easy plays for everyone around him. We're playing well right now." "It was one of those nights where everybody shot the ball well and passed the ball well," Davis said. "Then Mash got hot and I got hot." The Wizards have lost three straight games, all by at least 20 points. They lead the NBA with 25 double-digits losses, including eight by 20 points or more. Washington has lost three in a row by at least 20 points for the first time since 1966, when it dropped a franchise-record four straight. "It's sad, man," said Wizards guard Juan Dixon, who scored 16 points. "I'm sitting on the bench at the end of the second half and I'm looking at the score, and I've never lost like this in my life. I look at the score and a tear's about to come in my eye. That's how bad it hurts. "The guys have got to come together. We've got to win some games. Me personally, this hurts bad. I never lost like this and when I did, it wasn't by 25 points. Hopefully, we can turn this around soon because this is pathetic. Our chemistry definitely needs to get better. Guys are all over the place." The Wizards were overwhelmed by a 21-4 run by the Hornets in the third quarter. Armstrong scored eight points and Mashburn six in the surge. A 3-pointer by Armstrong made it 79-59 with 4:36 left. "The best is ahead of me," Mashburn said. "I'm going to get better as the season goes along. As long as I'm peaking come playoff time, I'll be fine. I'm a proven scorer and I know what I'm capable of." The Hornets emptied their bench in the fourth quarter and still widened their lead to 26 points. Veteran Steve Smith scored 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting and rookie David West had 11 points and 10 rebounds. New Orleans was coming off Tuesday's 89-75 win at Indiana. "If we don't beat the Wizards tonight, last night's win doesn't mean anything," forward P.J. Brown said. "We've given away a lot of games this year. We don't want to give away any more. The under-.500 teams, you've got to take care of business. You've got to take care of them."
