Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The new-look Portland Trail Blazers used an unfamiliar strategy to beat the well-traveled Los Angeles Clippers: defense. The Trail Blazers limited the Clippers to 37 percent shooting and blocked seven shots - five by Theo Ratliff - in a 101-86 victory that ended a three-game slide. "That's my M.O. since I got here," Ratliff said. "I just try to disrupt things for the teams on the (defensive end)." Former Clipper Derek Anderson scored 27 points to lead five players in double figures for the Trail Blazers, who defeated the Clippers for the ninth straight time in Portland. "We've got to find a rhythm with all these guys," Anderson said. "Every game is a playoff game." Portland had been one of the worst defensive teams in the league but limited Los Angeles to just 28-of-75 from the field. The contest turned in the second quarter. The Clippers built a 24-14 lead after the first period, but Portland outscored Los Angeles, 34-17, in the quarter, including 11 points from Anderson and 10 from Zach Randolph. Randolph came off the bench for the first time all season and collected 17 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes. Portland's bench outscored Los Angeles', 34-6. The Blazers' 14 first-quarter points matched a season low, but they went on to shoot 56 percent (34-of-61) for the final three periods. "At the beginning, we were slow-moving," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "In the second quarter, Zach and Omar (Cook) and Ruben (Patterson) pushed the tempo up and came in with a lot of energy. "I still think we are a playoff team, we're coming together, but obviously can't afford too many losses." Los Angeles used a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter and pull within 73-68. However, Anderson answered with six straight points and the Clippers could not respond. They have not won at the Rose Garden since April 11, 1999. "After having two good practices and a good first quarter, I'm very disappointed on how we played the rest of the game," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We were too soft tonight." Corey Maggette scored 23 points for Los Angeles, which concluded its NBA season-high nine-game road swing by losing five straight after an encouraging 3-1 start. "In the second, third and fourth quarters we were horrible," Maggette said. "They capitalized and got the win. You've got to take this as a learning experience and get better."
