Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Isiah Thomas has provided plenty of optimism for fans of the New York Knicks. But Andrei Kirilenko and the Utah Jazz showed there is still plenty of work to be done. Kirilenko scored 23 points and the Jazz outhustled the Knicks throughout a 92-78 victory. Since being hired as president of basketball operations on December 23, Thomas has made a host of moves, including changing coaches. But he made no moves at Thursday's trade deadline. Thomas could not like what he saw in this one as the Jazz came out with much more energy, never trailed and led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter. Fans voiced their displeasure by reigning boos on the home team. Kirilenko, a first-time All-Star this season, led the way and Greg Ostertag and Aleksandar Pavlovic scored 16 points apiece to help Utah snap a three-game losing streak. "Tonight we hustled and played with high energy," Kirilenko said. "It's been tough, we've been up and down." Jarron Collins had 12 rebounds to lead the Jazz, who held a commanding 46-30 edge on the boards. Collins and Pavlovic were inserted into the lineup in place of DeShawn Stevenson, who was traded Thursday and Ostertag. "I don't know if it worked but at least we played hard," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "There was a total difference than the way we played the last two games and the way we played this game." Stephon Marbury netted 21 points and recently acquired Tim Thomas had 17 for the Knicks, who made the final score respectable with a 10-2 run to close the contest. "They definitely did a good of taking it to us," said Marbury, who had his 27th birthday spoiled. "We didn't contribute at all as far as trying to win. We didn't play well as a team. You just have to take it how it is." Rookie Maurice Williams scored all seven of his points in a 14-4 run over the final 4:53 of the first half, helping the Jazz build a 43-28 lead. Ostertag had 10 points in the half. The Knicks shot just 29 percent (10-of-35) in the opening half and never recovered. They trailed by double-digits the entire second half en route to their third loss in four games. "In the first half we were like running in sand," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We came out very flat and couldn't get anything going. We've been playing pretty good, it's just that tonight we were flat and our execution wasn't very good." Kirilenko helped the Jazz maintain the lead in the second half, when he had 15 points. "We just didn't execute at all," Tim Thomas said. "The bottom line is that it was a terrible game for us. It was just one of those nights. We have to throw it out the window, regroup and come back Sunday (vs. Cleveland)."
