Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets 
and coach Lawrence Frank are rewriting record books.

Kenyon Martin had 23 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and four
blocks and Jason Kidd narrowly missed another triple-double as
the Nets ran their club-record winning streak to 13 games with a
97-84 triumph over the New Orleans Hornets.

New Jersey's 13-game run is the longest in its 36-year history -
including a nine-year stint in the ABA - and matches the
longest in the league this season.

The Nets also improved to 12-0 under Frank, extending his NBA
record for consecutive wins to start a career.  The 12 straight
wins equal the best start in professional sports history, last
accomplished in 1988 by Boston Red Sox manager Joe Morgan.

Kidd had 11 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Nets,
who have won seven straight at Continental Airlines Arena to
improve to 19-8 at home.  Richard Jefferson added 21 points.

"Our mind-set is not about losing, it's about getting better
every game," Kidd said. "We just try to keep the focus and
maintain the tempo."

Jamal Mashburn collected 28 points and 13 rebounds and Jamaal
Magliore added 14 and 12 for the Hornets, who had a three-game
winning streak snapped.

The Nets led 25-24 after a tight opening quarter, but Lucious
Harris provided a spark off the bench with 10 1/2 minutes left
in the half.  He made 4-of-6 shots in the period as New Jersey
extended its advantage to 51-44 at halftime.

"They were big pluses when they came in and the score increased
when they left," Frank said of his second unit.  "I think our
bench has been super. We have had great balance during our
success over the last 2 1/2 years."

New Orleans had trouble solving Frank's defensive schemes in the
first half, shooting 37 percent (15-of-41) and committing 10
turnovers.

"Their pressure didn't really bother us, they just played a good
half-court defense," Hornets guard Baron Davis said.  "They got
us into the half-court game and forced us to take jumpers.  I
thought when we went to the hole, we missed some good
opportunites."

New Orleans opened the second half with a 13-6 run and tied it,
57-57, on a 3-pointer by Davis with 8:11 to go in the third
quarter.

Martin snapped a 59-59 deadlock and ignited a 10-0 spurt with a
short hook shot.  The All-Star forward had six points in the
run, which Kerry Kittles capped with a driving layup with 4:29
remaining.

Martin's big night was more impressive, considering he was
battling illness.

"To be truthful, I really didn't feel well, but I'm here, so I'm
going to show up and play," he said.  "I didn't really play
well last night and I didn't play that many minutes, either.  I
just wanted to come out and give an effort.  I got my second
wind and I felt good."

New Jersey's lead was down to 74-68 entering the final period,
but the Nets used a 12-2 burst to open things up.  New Orleans
got no closer than eight points over the final seven minutes.
"We had a lot of fast-break points," Jefferson said.  "That's a
lot of getting layups, so that's a lot of points in the paint,
also.  It's not like we're just beating them in the half-court
set.  With a team like that, you have to drive to the paint."

"They play off their athleticism and they continue to run the
floor consistently," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said.  "That's
probably the thing they do best.  They pressure and run, and
they're athletes."
