Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Michael Redd missed a chance to tie it from the free-throw line with one-tenth of a second remaining, allowing the Los Angeles Clippers to hold on for a 105-103 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. After Los Angeles used a 13-2 run to grab a 103-99 lead, Redd buried a 3-pointer with five seconds to play and the Bucks had a chance to tie following two free throws by Clippers forward Corey Maggette. Damon Jones got caught in the air on the right wing but handed the ball to Redd, who was fouled by Maggette on a 3-point attempt. An All-Star who is shooting 88.5 percent from the line, Redd hit the front rim with his first attempt, all but sealing Milwaukee's fate. He made the second, missed the third intentionally and was called for a lane violation. Redd struggled all night, going 4-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-9 from the line for 14 points. "He's a terrific player, our game plan is centered on stopping him," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We give a lot of help, double-teams in the low post. Guys individually worked hard at stopping him." It was the second straight loss for the Bucks, who introduced Keith Van Horn to a standing ovation with 2:57 left in the first quarter. Acquired on Sunday in a three-team trade, Van Horn totaled 23 points and eight rebounds. "It feels great," said Van Horn, who played 30 minutes off the bench in his first game since leaving New York. "The people here have been tremendous, very supportive of me coming here. It feels good. I would have liked to have rewarded them with a win tonight." Elton Brand scored 31 points and made a key block in the closing minute for the Clippers, who won their second straight and snapped a five-game road losing streak. Brand scored at least 30 points for the second time in as many games and added 10 rebounds and five assists in 43 minutes. He also rejected Toni Kukoc with 55 seconds left and Los Angeles clinging to a 100-99 lead. "I was ready," Brand said of his playing time. "I don't have anything to do tomorrow but practice. I had some big blocks and some energy out there. It was a tough game. I'm proud we pulled it through." Marko Jaric began the 13-2 run with a 3-pointer, getting the Clippers within 97-93 with 3:20 remaining. Following a layup by Kukoc, Bobby Simmons scored inside and Maggette made a 3-pointer to make it 99-98. Simmons put Los Angeles ahead for good, 100-99, on a jumper from the right corner with 55 seconds to go. He had 12 points in 21 minutes off the bench after missing 16 games with a hip injury. Los Angeles was allowing 98.6 points per game - fourth-worst in the NBA entering the night - but had four straight stops down the stretch. "The last couple of minutes, we really believed we could come back and we played tough defense," Jaric said. "We made some great plays down the stretch." Brand's block of Kukoc was the second. After Maggette sliced to the basket for a layup and a 102-99 advantage, Redd tried to go over Brand in the lane but missed wildly. "That is always the key," Clippers guard Quentin Richardson said of the team's defense. "We have guys who can put points on the board. If we play good defense, that is when we win games."
