Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks have seen enough of rookie sensation LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 31 points and James contributed 22 in his first appearance at Madison Square Garden as the Cavaliers posted a 92-86 victory to improve to 3-0 against the Knicks this season. "Being a part of this arena, you can't even dream of it," James said of his first visit to New York. "You have to be a part of it. This is the best arena. Watching games from the past, you feel like you're part of it just being on the court." While James did not disappoint in his much anticipated visit here, the Cavaliers got a nice boost from Ilgauskas, who came in averaging just 14.2 points per game. He preferred to talk not about himself but James. "He's a great player," Ilgauskas said. "All of the attention he gets, he deserves it. I am doing my job. Sometimes, I'm able to help and sometimes not. It's been an up-and-down year for me." Ilgauskas finished four points shy of his career high against a team that could have drafted him in 1996. The Knicks had the 18th, 19th and 21st picks in the draft that year and took John Wallace, Walter McCarty and Dontae Jones. The Cavaliers selected Ilgauskas 20th. "He's (Ilgauskas) learning now to stay in there and he's getting some toughness about him," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "He was always skilled, now he's getting tough." The Lenny Wilkens' honeymoon is over for the Knicks, who again were booed during their second straight lackluster performance at home. New York was coming off a 92-78 defeat to Utah in which it scored just 28 points in the first half. Sunday's game was not as close as the score indicated as the Cavaliers built an 81-58 lead on Jeff McInnis' 3-pointer with 7:09 remaining, then held on as the Knicks scrambled. The Cavaliers were coming off an impressive 89-87 home victory over defending champion San Antonio on Friday and played with confidence Sunday. James seemed right at home playing in front of the Garden crowd. "We got another win," he said. "We beat the world champions the other night at home and we come on the road and beat one of the best teams in the Eastern Conferencee. I loved every moment of it, especially when Z (Ilgauskas) caught fire." The Cavaliers won the previous two contests against the Knicks in Cleveland, including a 107-96 victory on January 6 in Stephon Marbury's New York debut. The teams meet again in New York on April 14 in the regular season finale. Marbury finished with 30 points Sunday but was a non-factor for the first three quarters, managing just 10 points. He attempted 34 shots, making only 13. "We just have to get through it and eventually we will click," Marbury said of the Knicks' recent struggles. "Today, we played with a lot of heart and we never gave up. We continued to play. We never played like we were going to lose." But the Knicks are in their first slump under Wilkens, having dropped four of their last five games. "Our chemistry isn't where it was four games ago," Wilkens said. "We have to get back there. Right now, we're missing a lot of opportunities. We were getting great wide-open shots, but we have to put them down. We have to nail those shots."
