Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Raja Bell had a lot better fourth quarter than the Seattle SuperSonics did. Bell scored 13 of his 23 points in the final period to lift the Jazz to a 99-86 comeback victory, their eighth in a row at home over the SuperSonics. Seattle, which managed just 10 points in the fourth quarter, has not won at the Delta Center since February 1, 2000. The teams meet again Wednesday at KeyArena. All-Star Andrei Kirilenko contributed 27 points and 10 rebounds and Carlos Arroyo scored 23 points for Utah, which had lost four of its previous five games and eight of 11. Seattle held a 76-70 lead after Antonio Daniels split a pair of free throws with 1:12 left in the third quarter. The SuperSonics had made their first 30 free throws until Daniels missed his second attempt. Utah scored the final three points of the period before opening the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run. The Jazz took the lead for good, 77-76, on a jumper by rookie reserve Maurice Williams with 10:34 to play. Seattle trailed, 79-76, when coach Nate McMillan was ejected for picking up his second technical foul of the contest with 9:14 to play. "We play a half, three quarters, 3 1/2 quarters, and somewhere in the second half we break down," McMillan said. "We knew this team was going to play physical and aggressive, and foul and play hard, and they did, and they were able to pull away in the fourth quarter." The bulge was 86-80 after Seattle All-Star Ray Allen made two free throws with 6:40 left before Bell reeled off the game's next seven points to break open the contest. "I just got open looks," said Bell, who shot 9-of-14. "I've been trying to get them, and they're a lot easier to shoot. Sometimes, when they're contested, shots are hard to make. But I like my chances when they're wide open." Bell fell two points shy of his season high etsablished three times, including once against Seattle. Allen scored 26 points and Daniels added 22 for Seattle, which shot just 34 percent (22-of-65) from the field. "We had a lot of breakdowns in the fourth quarter," Allen said. "It just seemed like we didn't get anything offensively, and they took advantage of all of our mistakes. And defensively we were terrible." "We had chances, but we didn't follow through, we missed a lot of wide-open shots," said Seattle forward Rashard Lewis, who was held to five points on 1-of-9 shooting in 37 minutes. "I don't think we executed our plays like we should have." Utah led by as many as 12 points late in the second quarter and took a 54-46 edge into the break. But Daniels got hot in the third quarter, scoring 11 points to help Seattle take a lead into the final period. "We weren't really executing well," Bell said of the third quarter. "We were letting the shot clock down on us and we aren't effective when we do that. We have to shoot good shots when they are open, and execute to get those shots."
