Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins and Brandon Hunter got the Boston Celtics off to a good start. Unfortunately, Paul Pierce wasn't there at the finish. Pierce fouled out in the fourth quarter and the Celtics wasted a 40-point first quarter in their seventh straight loss, a 106-104 setback to the Milwaukee Bucks. Clearly looking toward the future, Celtics interim coach John Carroll changed his starting lineup, inserting Atkins, a point guard acquired last week from Detroit, and Hunter, a rookie power forward. Both players responded, as Atkins had 14 points and eight assists and Hunter had the best game of his brief career with 17 points and nine rebounds. The duo combined to help Boston open a 40-28 lead after one period. "I felt pretty good," Atkins said. "I haven't played in a week. It's different playing 40 minutes, but I'll get used to it and we'll get better." "He just wants me to play hard, rebound and defend," Hunter said. "It felt good to go from injured reserve to not playing to starting. Like I said, I just try to go out there and play as hard as I can and hopefully help my team." But the Bucks battled back and took advantage of Pierce's foul trouble. The All-Star guard got a technical foul before sitting down with his fifth foul with 9:50 to go and committed an offensive foul with 2:48 left and the Celtics trailing, 100-98. He scored 21 points. "That's how it is when you're a team who's not in the playoffs. You don't get the benefit of the calls, so it's to be expected," Pierce said. A three-point play by Mark Blount, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, gave the Celtics their last lead. Keith Van Horn, who had made just one shot to that point, sank a hook to give the Bucks the lead for good at 102-101 with 2:07 remaining. Damon Jones and Michael Redd added hoops for a 106-101 bulge before Boston battled back, closing to 106-104 on a basket and free throw by Ricky Davis. On its last possession, Walter McCarty banked in a 30-footer just after the buzzer. Redd scored 26 points and Desmond Mason added 21 for the Bucks, who have won two in a row on the road after dropping seven straight away from home. Van Horn scored just four points on 2-of-10 shooting. "I needed to make one big basket," Van Horn said. "It was just one of those nights. I just tried to stick with it and that opportunity came about." Milwaukee played without starting rookie point guard T.J. Ford, who suffered a bruised spinal cord Tuesday and was placed on the injured list. Damon Jones and Erick Strickland ran the offense, combing for 16 points and 10 assists. "When you have someone step out in this league, the guys behind you gotta come in and give you a good effort and win ballgames and they did that," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "Damon and Erick came in and they did a good job of running our team." Carroll dropped to 1-12 since replacing Jim O'Brien as coach. Boston made just 22-of-39 free throws and has lost 13 of its last 14 games. "I thought we got a great effort from a lot of our guys and I just feel as though we deserved to win," Carroll said. "We worked hard for a win and didn't get it. When you miss that many free throws, after all those good things that we did, it's hard to overcome that." The Celtics shot 70 percent (16-of-23) in the first quarter and raced to a 40-28 lead. But the Bucks scored the first 12 points of the second period to tie it, and neither team led by more than five points thereafter. "(Atkins) knows how to push it, he knows how to find the open man, knows how to hit the jumper when it's there," Carroll said. "He played very, very well, you see what he adds to our team." Two free throws and a hook by Daniel Santiago gave Milwaukee a 100-95 lead with 5:17 to go. Pierce drilled a 3-pointer 26 seconds later but fouled out shortly thereafter. Bucks forward Joe Smith sprained his left ankle midway through the first quarter and did not return.
