Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Yao Ming and LeBron James were upstaged by Clarence Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon scored nine of his season-high 12 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Houston Rockets to a 90-84 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. The nationally televised contest was billed as a matchup of the last two top overall picks in the NBA draft. The 7-5 Yao had 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, including one on James in the fourth quarter. The 6-8 James struggled with just 11 points on 5-of-18 shooting. "(James) looked tired," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "Early on, he really struggled. He picked it up in the second half, but he was not the LeBron we're used to seeing." Weatherspoon, acquired from New York in a midseason trade, took charge in the final period. He made four baskets, including a jumper that gave Houston a 78-74 lead with 3:02 remaining. "I just came in and tried to add some energy and be active," said Weatherspoon, who also had nine rebounds. "As a veteran, that's what I try to do. The last couple of weeks, I've been able to find a way to score, and I think that's why I was in there. I've been able to get myself going and be a part of the offense." "I think he's played consistently well," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He's an excellent defender and a very good rebounder. He's not a 'mistake' player; he doesn't turn the ball over, and he brings an intensity that we need. Plus, he's a very good jump shooter. He's been tremendous." After Weatherspoon's spurt, Cuttino Mobley took over, converting a three-point play and a jumper before finding Yao for a dunk that made it 85-79 with 42 seconds to go. "We have so many guys on this team that can score, so if all of us have 17 points, then that's great," said Mobley, who scored 22 points. Jim Jackson scored 15 points for the Rockets, who won for the seventh time in 10 games despite a poor game from Steve Francis. The All-Star guard had just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting. Jeff McInnis and Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 17 points each and Carlos Boozer added 16 and 18 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who shot less than 40 percent (35-of-88). "We had a lot of wide-open shots, especially in the first half, and we didn't capitalize on them," James said. "We can't win without hitting shots." A layup by McInnis gave Cleveland its last lead at 67-66 with 8:53 to go before Weatherspoon had a layup and jumper and Yao drilled a 21-footer. "(Weatherspoon) killed us down the stretch. That was unexpected," McInnis said. "We didn't underestimate him, but we didn't expect him to step up and make shots like that. I was shocked he was in the game because he hasn't been playing much, but he came out there and played good." Weatherspoon answered a 3-pointer by McInnis with a jumper and Yao threw in a jumper for a 76-70 lead with 4:21 left. "He's a player who always works hard," Yao said through an interpreter. "We need guys like him coming in and filling holes offensively and defensively."
