Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- In a plodding game with 62 fouls, eight technicals and four disqualifications, a guy named "Speedy" took over. Speedy Claxton scored a career-high 28 points as the Golden State Warriors snapped the five-game winning streak of the Memphis Grizzlies with a 99-92 victory. A 5-11 point guard, Claxton also handed out seven assists and made a career-high 16 free throws in 18 attempts before fouling out with just over a minute to play. The Warriors made 35-of-40 free throws. "I came in mentally focused and wanted this game bad," Claxton said. "(Memphis guard) Earl Watson was a big factor (the) last time we played and coach reminded me today that I would get another chance against him. This was a huge win for us." Watson finished with eight points and three assists before fouling out. Jason Richardson added 24 points and seven rebounds for Golden State, which won on the road for just the seventh time this season. Grizzlies leading scorer Pau Gasol was held by Erick Dampier to 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting. "Our game plan was to be physical with him, and let someone else beat us," Dampier said. "We got a lot of calls in the second and third quarter and we went to the free-throw line and made our shots." The game was a see-saw battle before the Warriors seized control for good, taking a 71-69 lead entering the fourth quarter. Memphis coach Hubie Brown was given a second technical foul and ejected by referee Joey Crawford with 6:14 to play. The Grizzlies drew no closer than five points thereafter. In all, Crawford called technicals on Grizzlies Lorenzen Wright, James Posey, Bonzi Wells and two on a dumbfounded Brown. For good measure, Memphis picked up an illegal defense technical, bringing their total to six, a team record. "We're not being crybabies," Brown said. "We are not a technical foul team. For us to get six technicals, we'd have to play for months. I got a technical from a guy on the other end of the floor (Crawford) who has no idea what in the hell I'm talking about. There was no swearing." Memphis led, 57-54, before Wells, Wright, and Posey picked up technicals in a span of 11 seconds. When the dust cleared, Golden State had a 60-57 lead. Posey scored 25 points for the Grizzlies, who had won six straight home games.
