Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors had three starters in street clothes, and it became painfully obvious with the game on the line. The Washington Wizards snapped a five-game slide with a 76-74 victory over the Raptors when newly acquired Jannero Pargo's 3-pointer slammed off the backboard as time expired. With Jalen Rose and Vince Carter already on the injured list, the Raptors also were without starting point guard Alvin Williams for the second consecutive game due to a sore right knee. Toronto has dropped seven in a row. "We could have very easily lost that game," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "You know we needed it, they needed it, too. Both teams were desperate." Toronto trailed, 75-74, when Roger Mason, Jr. missed a reverse layup with 16 seconds to play. After Jerry Stackhouse made 1-of-2 free throws, Pargo was the only Raptor to touch the ball, and his heave badly missed at the buzzer. "We were trying to get the ball to Donyell (Marshall) on the second-to-last possession," Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill said. "They did a good job of fronting him. The last one we were doing on the fly and Pargo attempted, probably from inexperience, to shoot over a 7-foot guy." The Raptors erased a 15-point deficit and took a 62-60 lead with just over six minutes left before coming up short. "We call Alvin 'Mr. Fourth Quarter,'" Morris Peterson said. "It's hard not having him, but we don't want to make excuses. We need to step up and find a way to win." The bickering Wizards did their best to give away the game by committing 22 turnovers and playing tentatively. "We talked about turnovers at halftime and we come out and turn the ball over so much," Jordan said. "Our defense was playing as great as it has in the last week and a half, but our offense was killing us." A feud between forward Kwame Brown and guard Gilbert Arenas played itself out on the court as Arenas did not shoot until five minutes remained and finished with seven points and only one assist. "It wasn't a point I was trying to make," Arenas said. "If I pass the ball for the first three quarters and make everybody happy, I can do my thing in the fourth when it really counts. "You know I ain't young anymore so I don't (care) about shots. I've proven myself in this league. All that matters is winning games. If we would have lost it would have been my fault, but we won, so congratulations to everybody else." Washington was led by Brown, who had 16 points and eight rebounds. "It was a must win. We made the came out and played hard and got the win," Brown said. "Tonight, we had an advantage in the post, Some nights it's not going to be like that, there will be big guys in the post and that's when Gilbert and them exploit their matchups." Marshall led Toronto's makeshift squad with 20 points.
