Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets had Jamaal Magloire and P.J. Brown to take care of Jermaine O'Neal. The Indiana Pacers did not have Ron Artest to take care of Jamal Mashburn. Mashburn scored 22 points and O'Neal was shut down as the Hornets defeated the Pacers for the second time in 11 days, 89-77. Perhaps the best low-post player in the Eastern Conference, O'Neal was defended alternately by Magloire and Brown, with guard Darrell Armstrong double-teaming on the catch. He was limited to five points in the first half and finished with 15 on just 5-of-14 shooting. "Defensively, there were just very good individual efforts across the board," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. "The obvious one is O'Neal. Darrell was involved in that with helping double there." "We played a lot of different defenses on him early in the game," Magloire said. "We mixed it up and tried to keep him guessing. He seemed to be off balance and it took him awhile to get into a rhythm." Artest is one of the best defenders in the league but suffered torn thumb ligaments in a February 17 home loss to New Orleans. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Al Harrington, who made Mashburn work for his points but could not slow him down. "(Artest) really plays hard and he is relentless," Brown said. "He brings a lot of emotion and intangibles. We definitely had more room to operate out there tonight." "To me, Mashburn is an All-Star player," Carlisle said. "He's that good. He brings them another dimension in shot-making and playmaking." Mashburn made just 10-of-29 shots but grabbed nine rebounds as the Hornets dominated on the boards, 52-36. Brown had 17 points and eight rebounds and Magloire 16 and 11. "The last two games (against Indiana), we have controlled all phases of the game," Brown said. "If we can keep that up, not only against the Pacers but against everyone else we play, I like our chances." Jamaal Tinsley scored 14 points for the Pacers, who shot less than 36 percent (28-of-78) and had a three-game winning streak snapped. Since February 3, the only team Indiana has lost to is New Orleans. While shutting down O'Neal, Brown scored seven points in a 14-2 run that closed the first quarter and gave the Hornets the lead for good, 22-17. "We had a great plan for O'Neal," Brown said. "We did a good job on him. Baron Davis and Darrell were coming out and messing up his rhythm, and he's a rhythm shooter. I got in his face." A thunderous dunk by Davis over O'Neal closed the second quarter and gave New Orleans a 46-34 lead. It held a 27-17 advantage on the glass in the first half. "We got outrebounded by a lot and the second-chance points were 10-1," Carlisle said. "We were down 12 and it seemed like a lot more." Trailing 70-55 entering the fourth quarter, Indiana closed to 78-70 on a 3-pointer by Austin Croshere with 4:29 to go. Davis, who scored 18 points, responded with a 3-pointer that effectively sealed it.
