Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks turned it over, allowing the Denver Nuggets to turn it around. The Nuggets converted 27 turnovers by the Knicks into 33 points and rode 25 points from rookie Carmelo Anthony to a 107-96 victory that ended a season-high five-game losing streak. "We needed that win badly," Anthony said. "Losing five games in a row - that's tough to take." The Knicks completed a winless four-game road trip and have lost six in a row, tying a season high. Ten days ago, the Nuggets were 32-23 and appeared to be a certainty for their first playoff berth in nine years. But their recent slide - which included three losses by four points or less - put their postseason aspirations in jeopardy. Also riding a slide, the Knicks may have needed a win more than the Nuggets. But they didn't play like it, giving away the game with their sloppiness. New York set a tone by committing 17 turnovers in the first half and falling behind, 52-43. Denver widened the lead to 18 points in both the third and fourth quarters. "We were killing ourselves with turnovers," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We had 17 in the first half, a lot of them unforced. We've got to be patient. If a guy is not open, don't pass him the ball. We've got to play smarter than we did. The first quarter set the tone for the whole game." "We're one of the top teams in the league at forcing turnovers," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We need to keep playing hard. Voshon Lenard scored 16 points for the Nuggets, who shot 50 percent (38-of-76) from the field and had six players in double figures. "We can't afford to exhale at this time," Bzdelik said. "Every game is critical." Knicks guard Stephon Marbury had a terrible game, scoring just five points with nine turnovers. Not even the return of Allan Houston could help the Knicks. Houston, who had missed the last 13 games with a sore knee, looked sharp at times and scored 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting. But he also committed three turnovers. "Chemistry is not an excuse for turnovers," Houston said. "I think we let the pressure get to us or we were careless." New York has won just once since acquiring Tim Thomas and Nazr Mohammed for Keith Van Horn in a three-team deal on All-Star Weekend. The Knicks are sixth in the Eastern Conference but just one game ahead of ninth-place Boston. "You can always said the trade was bad because we have lost six in a row," said Knicks guard Penny Hardaway, who scored 15 points off the bench. "There is going to be a lot of bad things said, but we are terrible right now." "It is up to us," Wilkens said. "Our destiny is in our own hands. We need to start playing defense and take care of the ball." Kurt Thomas had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who had won their last three meetings with the Nuggets.
