Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- This time it was much closer, but the result was the same for the depleted Toronto Raptors against the Boston Celtics. Paul Pierce scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Celtics handed the Raptors their ninth straight loss, 91-82. Boston won the season series from Toronto for the first time since 1997-98. The teams were playing the back end of a home-and-home series, with the Celtics dominating Friday's game, 88-75. "These are two big wins to win the season series, because of the tiebreaker," Pierce said. "We finally got our confidence going with a couple of wins under our belt. We got written off by everybody. It would be redemption to make the playoffs and we like our chances." Boston (25-36) is tied with Cleveland, one game behind Miami and Toronto for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Unlike Friday, the Raptors had chance to win this one. The game was tied, 70-70, with 6 1/2 minutes left when the Celtics went on a 11-3 run to take control. "I don't think it was pretty, but I told our guys the rule in the NBA is to win by one," Boston interim coach John Carroll said. "That's the rule, find a way to win and we did. (Paul) made the key baskets to win the game for us." The Celtics shot 52 percent (36-of-69) from the field and held the Raptors to 38 percent (31-of-81). Boston has won consecutive games for the first time since January 20-23. Former Celtic Milt Palacio had a season-high 19 points and eight assists for Toronto, which was playing without superstar Vince Carter for the sixth straight game. The Raptors also are without starters Jalen Rose and Alvin Williams. "We're fighting for a playoff spot and that team (Celtics) has been struggling even worse than we have since their coaching change," Toronto forward Donyell Marshall said. "It just seemed like they wanted it more than we did. We've got 23 games left. I know we're without two of our better players, but we've got to find a way." Newly acquired Dion Glover had 13 points and nine rebounds but committed five turnovers. Glover asked for his release from Atlanta on Thursday and was signed Saturday. "I know once Vince, Jalen, and Alvin get back, we will be fine," Glover said. "If guys keep playing hard like this we will pick up some wins while they are out."
