Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Gilbert Arenas won the battle of point guards. Arenas drained two clutch 3-pointers in overtime to outduel Baron Davis as the Washington Wizards recovered from a huge blown lead to post a 111-106 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Coming off a 35-point effort in Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Arenas had 22 points in the first half in this one, as the Wizards opened a surprising 58-40 lead. But Arenas managed just five points over the next two quarters, when the Wizards squandered a 21-point advantage. Davis led the comeback for the Hornets, scoring 31 of his 33 points after the half. In overtime, Arenas rediscovered his scoring touch. His first 3-pointer gave the Wizards a 102-100 lead, then after Davis hit a runner to tie it, Arenas sank another shot from beyond the arc with 2:03 left to give Washington the lead for good. Arenas finished with 35 points, 11 assists and four steals. He went 13-of-27 from the field and made half of the Wizards' 10 3-pointers. "We did a great job," Arenas said. "Everybody contributed at the end of the game when we needed it. They denied me the ball and everybody pulled it out tonight." "It was a gutsy performance," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "He relished it. It was a playoff atmosphere. Gilbert was the guy who carried us from beginning to end." It also was a huge night for Davis, who had 11 assists and six of the Hornets' 14 steals. Rookie Jarvis Hayes added 19 points and Etan Thomas 13 and 12 rebounds for Washington, which has won three of four following a five-game losing streak. A 3-pointer by rookie Steve Blake gave the Wizards their biggest lead at 82-61 lead with 2:48 left in the third quarter. But the Hornets began their comeback with an 11-4 surge to end the period. Brendan Haywood contributed 11 points and Blake 10 for the Wizards, who shot 52 percent (43-of-83) and won despite committing 20 turnovers. Using a pressing style, the Hornets continued their surge in the fourth quarter, using a 14-2 burst to pull within 91-90 with 4:24 left on David Wesley's basket. Davis had eight points in the burst. "It was just a heck of a shot that we had to take," Jordan said. "They put some defense on us that we had never seen as far as on the ball." "Darrell Armstrong and Baron Davis were just terrific on the eight-second line," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. "They really created great pressure and forced some turnovers. They were outstanding defensively during that stretch." Jamaal Magloire, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds, gave the Hornets their first lead of the contest, 94-93, with a shot inside with 3:31 to go. Davis' layup with 3:16 left extended the lead to three before Kwame Brown scored inside and Jared Jeffries made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:15 to go, tying the contest, 96-96. The teams went scoreless the rest of quarter. Davis had a chance to win it as time expired in regulation, but his 3-pointer hit the back of the rim. "We are not playing with a sense of urgency," Davis said. "We knew that this game was important to us and in the first half we didn't come out and play team basketball, and sacrifice on the defensive end like we normally do. In the second half, we were backed into a wall, but we came out ready to play." Jamal Mashburn added 28 points for New Orleans, which lost its fourth straight road game.
