Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- While Michael Finley was his usual self, rookie Marquis Daniels was effective in playing the role of Steve Nash. Finley scored 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and Daniels played well in Nash's absence as the Dallas Mavericks concluded a perfect five-game homestand with an 107-96 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics. A stomach virus forced Nash to miss his second game of the season and first since November 5. Without Nash, Daniels made his third career start and scored 14 points in 45 minutes. Nash was not with the team and did not travel with Dallas on its postgame flight to Minnesota. He may not play Wednesday, when the Mavericks open a three-game road trip. But Dallas was in a close struggle with Seattle and faced a 71-69 deficit through three quarters. As he has done several times this season, Finley took over, scoring 11 points during a 22-1 run that gave Dallas a 92-78 lead with 5:16 remaining. "I knew I had to be assertive (without Nash)," Finley said. "I think I was pushing it too much in the first three quarters, taking shots out of rhythm and just trying to do too much. In the fourth, I just let everything come to me and got into a great rhythm." "The guy is unbelievable," Dallas forward Antawn Jamison said. "He's the one that gets us going. In the locker room and out there on the court, he leads by example. He's one of those guys that you definitely respect. I knew he was a great player out there on the court, but I didn't know he was this kind of leader." An undrafted free agent out of Auburn, Daniels learned he was starting shortly before the game started. He played so well that he nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with nine assists and nine rebounds. "That was quite a test for us and we passed," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "Marquis played quite a game for a guy that stepped in when we needed him." "I had no idea," said Daniels, who played in just his 33rd game of the season. "I knew I was going to play a lot, but not that much. I got kind of passive and Mike kind of got on me. He just told me to stay aggressive." But it wasn't just the efforts of Daniels and Finley that helped Dallas score a season-high 38 points in the fourth quarter and win its eighth straight home game. Jamison scored 21 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 19 and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, who faced a 77-70 deficit early in the fourth period. "At first, we were just trying to figure out how to start the game without Steve and the rook (Daniels) got into the flow of the game," Jamison said. "When you've got guys like Michael Finley, myself and (Antoine) Walker, it's just a matter of time until we get into the groove offensively." Ray Allen scored 25 points for the SuperSonics, who lost for the fourth time in five games. "They made shots and we didn't," said Seattle coach Nate McMillan, whose team made just five baskets in the fourth quarter. "I thought we had some open looks that we didn't knock down. We had some easy baskets that we needed to make."
