Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Maybe teams should start resting their best player against the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets lost for the second time in three games to a team missing its best player as the New Jersey Nets overcame the absence of All-Star Jason Kidd and held on for a 95-91 victory behind Kerry Kittles, who scored a season-high 34 points. Denver had its season-high losing streak reach five games on Saturday with a 25-point loss to San Antonio, which was missing superstar Tim Duncan. It has also lost to the Lakers without Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal and Orlando without Tracy McGrady earlier this season. The Nuggets bounced back with a win on Sunday but could not take advantage of a Nets team without Kidd, who was sidelined with a bruised left knee. "We've played a lot teams (without) their best player out and haven't won once," guard Jon Barry said. "I don't know what it is. If it's a letdown or you just think the team is going to roll over. These guys are all professionals and are going to come out and play. We haven't been able to take advantage of it." Denver led by as many as 11 points in the first half led behind rookie Carmelo Anthony, who scored 15 points in the first quarter. But the Nuggets lost control of the game in the third as Kittles scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. "I was just playing well off the ball," he said. "I think I was just reading the defense and making good basket cuts. I was being aggressive. The shot felt pretty good, but I was just trying to make plays around the basket." The Nets squandered a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter but went to All-Star Kenyon Martin down the stretch. He gave New Jersey the lead for good at 89-87 on a turnaround jumper with 66 seconds left and added a layup 45 seconds later. "They overpowered us and they were more forceful to the rim," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Our advantage was our speed and quickness. but we never took it to our advantage. We stood around and got caught in a half court game. We allowed them to run their offense." Kittles sealed the game with four free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Nets went 24-of-27 from the line. New Jersey won for the 16th time in 18 games, improving to 15-2 under coach Lawrence Frank. It has won seven of its last eight road games. "I thought it was a tremendous victory from start to finish," Frank said. "Tonight's win is a result of everyone stepping up tonight. They should feel real good about themselves. The fact that they showed the ability to step up without their captain tonight." Martin had 22 points and eight rebounds and Lucious Harris handed out nine assists in place of Kidd as New Jersey opened a tough four-game road trip against the Western Conference. Rookie Carmelo Anthony scored 26 points but missed eight of his final 13 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers on the final possession as Denver fell to 1-1 on a four-game homestand.
