Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Once again, Bonzi Wells annoyed the fans at the Rose Garden. This time, it was as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. Wells ignored the boos and made a triumphant return to Portland by scoring 20 of his 28 points in the second half as the Grizzlies stayed hot with a 97-88 victory over the Trail Blazers. "I got booed in a Blazers jersey," Wells said. "I figured I'd get booed in a Memphis jersey. I play for Memphis now, so I really don't care." A scoring swingman, Wells spent his first five seasons with the Trail Blazers and had a rocky relationship with the fans. He once knocked their support and earlier this season, he flashed an obscene gesture at a fan. With the Trail Blazers looking to make over their image, Wells was traded in December to Memphis, where he is helping the Grizzlies pursue the first playoff berth in franchise history. Used primarily as a reserve, he is averaging 12.4 points, a shade more than he managed in Portland. "He's accepted his role, he's been a model citizen, he's early, he works his (tail) off in practice every day," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. Wells started in this game and was booed every time he touched the ball. But he was unruffled as he made 12-of-19 shots, including 4-of-6 3-pointers. "I know how it is when you are a successful player someplace," Brown said. "You go back to a place and you get booed, it just rips you apart. Then you have to hope you can win that game." "The boos hurt a little bit, but they made me want to go out and hit 3-pointers," Wells said. "I think the boos helped me a little bit." A pair of 3-pointers by Wells fueled a 12-3 burst that opened the third quarter and gave Memphis the lead for good at 57-48 with 8:43 remaining. He scored 13 points in the period, which ended with the Grizzlies holding a 75-66 lead. "It always seems to happen when players come back to a place after they've been traded," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "He had a great game." A basket by Wells gave the Grizzlies their largest lead at 90-74 with 4:52 to play. The Trail Blazers got no closer than six points thereafter, and Wells held the ball aloft in triumph as time ran out. "I miss my guys. I miss the whole situation around here," Wells said. "These are my best friends in the world, my brothers." "To see all his fellow teammates he had here hug him after the game is real special," Brown said. "That shows you what type of person he is." Pau Gasol had 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Grizzlies, who have won three in a row and improved to 22-7 since the new year. "You gotta understand, we're trying to come light years," Brown said. "We still have 21 to go and I've been in too many races. Just go back to the old Phillies (in 1964)." Ruben Patterson scored 19 points off the bench for Portland, which has lost three in a row following a season-high five game winning streak. The Trail Blazers also lost leading scorer and rebounder Zach Randolph to a hip injury in the fourth quarter.
