Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace returned to Portland as a member of the Detroit Pistons. Unfortunately, the Trail Blazers failed to show up. Wallace had 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots as his new team routed Portland, 83-68. It was Wallace's first appearance in Portland since the team sent him to Atlanta on February 10. He was traded to Detroit nine days later. The crowd gave Wallace a lukewarm reception, with the boos and cheers drowning each other out. "(Rasheed) came out and did his thing tonight," Detroit's Ben Wallace said. "He told us it wasn't anything special, he just wanted to win. He plays well on defense and blocks shots. He's exactly what our team needed." Chauncey Billups scored 16 points to lead five Pistons in double figures. Ben Wallace had 19 rebounds and four blocked shots for Detroit, which improved to 2-1 on a five-game road trip. Prior to the game, Rasheed Wallace arrived at the Rose Garden wearing the Portland jersey of another banished Blazer, Bonzi Wells. Portland was beaten by Wells' new team, the Memphis Grizzlies, on Wednesday. "(Rasheed) shouldn't get booed, he's been here a long time and did a lot for this organization," Portland All-Star forward Zach Randolph said. Following the game, Rasheed Wallace had no comment about his return to the city where he spent seven-plus seasons. The Pistons led 74-49 with eight minutes to play in this one before the Blazers narrowed the deficit after the outcome was no longer in doubt. The score was 27-16 after 12 minutes and 46-29 at halftime. Portland shot 34 percent (25-of-73) from the field and was dominated in the paint, getting outscored, 42-26. After the game, Rasheed Wallace exchanged hugs with former teammates Ruben Patterson and Dale Davis as well as his old coach, Maurice Cheeks. "I am 0-for-2 against Bonzi and Rasheed," Cheeks said. "But truly they (Detroit) beat us in every aspect of the game. They dominated from start to finish. We had no offensive flow and no defensive flow from the outset." Detroit coach Larry Brown did not come out for the third quarter and was receiving treatment on an ailing back. Brown did not return and assistant Mike Woodson served as coach the rest of the way. "Larry's fine," Woodson said. "He was just feeling uncomfortable over there."
