Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics would have lost a game like this two weeks ago. Paul Pierce fell just shy of a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Celtics rallied from a 12-point deficit for a 94-90 victory over the Washington Wizards. Boston has recovered from its midseason struggles, winning four consecutive games after losing 17 of their previous 20. After three relatively easy wins, the Celtics had to mount a comeback against the Wizards. "Every game is big from here on out," Boston coach John Carroll said. "We are in a dogfight and we know no one is going to hand it to us. Tonight the guys rose to the challenge." Washington had a 62-50 cushion with 3:30 left in the third quarter before Boston scored 20 of the next 26 points. The Celtics ended the third with a 10-3 run, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointer from Walter McCarty. Ricky Davis scored six points of his 17 points in the opening 3:20 of the fourth quarter as Boston took the lead for good. He had a fast-break dunk to give the Celtics their first lead at 70-68 with 8:40 remaining. Pierce scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including four free throws in the final 16 seconds. Boston made 16-of-19 free throws in the final period after making just three of its first 10 from the line. "The guys all stepped up tonight," Pierce said. "We need to dig in and work. Tonight, the work paid off. We need to keep pushing and fighting. We have started to put things together, but it gets even tougher from here." Mark Blount scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and rookie Marcus Banks added 12 off the bench for the Celtics. "Some of our bench guys, in particular Ricky and Marcus, really stepped up and gave us that extra push," Carroll said. "Marcus really changes the tempo and Ricky seems to come to life when we get out and run." Gilbert Arenas scored 26 points and Juan Dixon had 17 to lead Washington, which had won four of its previous five games. "We don't use moral victories, but we had the game and let it slip away," Arenas said. "We couldn't make the shots when it mattered." The Wizards had a 48-38 rebounding edge but shot just 39 percent (32-of-82) from the floor and committed 24 turnovers leading to 30 points for the Celtics. "We have to execute in order to take the next step," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "We need games like this in order to understand pressure. We didn't handle it well tonight, but we'll learn from it and get better."
